Sky Q

what are mini boxes?

They are the Q equivalent of the standard multiroom boxes.
Unlike normal HD, the multiroom boxes don't need to record as all recording runs from the main (Silver) box.
They don't have their own dish connection but connect to the main box using your internal wifi network.

Occasionally this disconnects. And because the mini's don't have a dish connection they are absolutely reliant on the main box functioning correctly.

We have two mini boxes and it's the one furthest away that disconnects the most, despite the wifi signal being strong (consistent 90-100mbps) where the box is located.
As I say, these are my only gripes, the rest is pretty good and will only get better as the software is developed and updated.

Ye my sister just said the same thing actually, about the disconnecting with multiroom.

Lets say not Q... with Multiroom you get a box like mine in the lounge and then you get other mini boxes to the other TVs in the house, is that right?

To be honest, maybe I was already paying too much??
I've never changed package in years, she told me I was on an old deal, with no perks, immediately offered to reduce my bill by 20%, without me even asking.
Adding the £12 per month back on, for sky Q, has me now paying £1 less per month than I was with old box.
I'd already recieved a letter telling me as a loyal customer I could have free installation, so she couldn't try charging extra there, because without the free install I wouldn't have gone ahead.

The way I see it is, pay enough monthly, without paying for engineers or install fees, I refuse to pay for this throughout my entire time with sky.

Like yourself, I've no choice/options.
There's no virgin tv in my area, get very poor reception via normal tv aerial, due to large trees at the back of my house.
House backs onto a farm, and the long tree lined driveway to a mansion house/hall.

So without a satellite dish, our tv viewing would be very limited and poor indeed.

Just to add, deal is set for 18 months, but as stated above, no intention to leave, as no other options really for us

Spoken to Sky over the last few days and have managed to get some money knocked off my account. :)

Regarding Sky Q, it is £99 installation and activation per box, including miniboxes. If I want one main box and one mini-box, it is £198. :mmm:

With normal HD you will have a Sky+HD main box then either more Sky+HD or non recordable SkyHD miniboxes in other rooms. If you want the extra boxes to record you need Sky+ boxes. With Q only the Silver (main) box records and acts as the hub for the mini boxes. As you dont need dish feeds to the Q mini boxes you can relocate them at will (assumimg you can get wifi signal in each location).

Last I knew the "Silver package" which is main box and one minibox was on offer at £149. Additional miniboxes over and above are £99 each.

Luckily I still have contacts and didnt pay anything and have the full subs package at £50 per month for a year.
All they need to do now is get the golf in 4K and I will be happy :D

As you can see the upfront charges have changed regularly and deals are available. I paid nothing (installed some time ago) and got the full upgrade (silver and 2 minis) for the same as my old package. I still see Q as a beta service and it will take sometime to bed in. For those of us who installed early we encountered multiple niggles and annoyances (nothing too serious), much as you would expect with a beta service. A few updates have come along since then which have addressed some if not most of those niggles. I imagine a year down the line it will be as stable as their old product.

That being said it is an excellent product with multiroom available now anywhere around the house without cables. Extra recording facilities is welcomed. I never have to think about clashing anymore. Sky are moving away from Live scheduled TV in a big way and are nudging you towards everything on demand.

I got a 15% of my bill for a year letter for my 10 year anniversary. Last month I cut my sports off and was pulled back for 6 months half price.

Ordered Sky Q last night. £60 for the 2TB box and a mini box for upstairs plus access on 2 tablets. £12 a month but can now cancel Sky Go plus as well as previous multiroom payments.
