Should Muirfield host the Open?

Not even an issue that it's a male only club. Plenty of single gender clubs/societies out there.

Bottom line is that it's a superb golf course and will once again provide a stern test.

I also see that I cant play Muirfield as a visitor because my h/cap is 24

If it was down to me I wouldn't even let you post on this forum with a handicap like that :ears:

To borrow a great term from FairwayDodger, sheer whatabouttery.

Indeed, a great term.

But giving it an amusing name doesn't change its validity.

My metric is 'Will this action lead to a fairer, free-er and better society (or club in this case)?' and, in this case, I don't believe it will.

It should host the open on the basis that it's one of the finest courses in the UK.

I don't really see what the clubs membership criteria has to do with the Open

The fact that the game of golf has a big image/exclusion problem and is still largely run by cretinous dinosaurs is another issue altogether....

You're right, I apologise and will rephrase...

People who complain about political correctness have usually not been a victim of discrimination in their entire lives.

That may be a fair point but if people look as close as the press do then i reckon everybody has been a victim of it at some point in their lives.

The only reason this has got a mention is because the press have stirred up the hornets nest. Nobody would of batted an eye lid if the story was about a local builder turned down for a membership would it?

Agreed. They are often people who basically think they can say whatever the hell they want to/about anyone and dismiss it as "banter". Lots of them, sadly, play golf....

Seems to me that The Open can't be held again until the R&A, who organise it, start allowing Women to be members of their club.
If we're debating whether Muirfield should host The Open due to it's membership policy then we also have to debate whether the R&A have the legitimacy to organise it...

Apart from providing the course, Muirfield probably don't have that much to do with the running of the event do they?

Indeed Host Club simply gets a fee and loads of kudos - plus provides a fair amount of labour - but doesn't actually have much say in the actual running of it. That's done by (part of) the R&A.

Would be great to have a different speech from Peter Dawson though!

That's great! :) Then if they can play and use the facilities and do all the other things men do as we have determined, then why cant they be members? It only makes the whole pointless policy even worse! Actually if I was a woman... why would I want to join this merry bunch of pompous twits anyway?!

Mike I know quite a few Muirfield members and I can assure you that they are anything but pompous twits. Like your own club there are always a few who are 'not quite there' but your generalisation of several hundred men is quite astonishing.
I think you have a class problem.
