hi all
i have a dilhemma.should i get a new driver for christmas or not ? i have only been playing around 5-6 months and i currently have my driver fromm a starter set of clubs. But i cannot hit it well , so i currently use my 3 wood , which i now have a nice smooth swing with, but i am losing yards against others in comps hu hit drivers . but i dont no whether i should get one or keep my 3 wood

It depends why you dont hit it well. If you slice it then maybe a draw version would help. The best thing to do is talk to your club pro and see what he says. I would hold off and maybe have a lesson. There is not much point in buying a nice new shiny stick if it never leaves your bag.

don't get a driver yet. I've been playing 20 years and only had a driver in the last 3 years. You;ve only been playing 6 months and your swing and game will change and you'll grow out of your new driver.

You are still new to the game. My advice would be to invest in some lessons and get a decent and repeatable swing and maybe focus on getting a good short game and putting well. That is where shots are saved. I'd wait and get use to playing a bit more and maybe look at a new driver as a birthday present next year.

When i was 13 i couldn't barely get it off the floor. :S. Stick with your 3 wood until until you are to a half decent standard. Also don't get too wound up about distance it is so much better to have a good short game. Trust me you sound like me not too long ago. Hope that helps.

Many years ago, in the days of persimmon headed drivers. I played golf with a guy who played off +2, he couldn't hit a driver worth a damn. He had a couple of custom made drivers and still couldn't hit them. End result used a three wood off the tee and still whooped our asses most weeks.

Get some lessons for Chrimbo then once your swing is better, handicap lower and your short game is like Seve it's time to worry about that driver.

Quite!. For now, use what you can use and develop your skills. Eventually - you may not need one. I do possess a driver but don't use it - I can hit my 3wood past the drivers of most of the guys I play withs. All things are relative, so no need to worry.

With the greatest respect, you being new to the game i would guess that a new driver is not going to make any difference to your game at this stage.
Better to spend any Crimbo money on a few lessons covering basic fundaments, then get that shiny new big stick next Christmas? :D

Hi,
What loft is your 3 wood and your driver, Is the set you got a mens set is so it might be a bit heavy for you to swing properly, you might benefit by getting a 12/13 degree driver or look at geting a ladies driver if you are not that big it might suit you better.

My first club was a cut down six iron which the local pro did for my Dad. I used to go over the local park and hit it and hit it. I'd then 'caddy' for my Dad - he'd slip the cut down club into his bag and when we were out of sight of the clubhouse he'd let me hit a few shots. It'd take me maybe four or five shots to get on the green but it gave me a reliable swing and the ability to hit the ball straight. My first set of clubs (around the age of 7/8) was a miss mash of clubs - mostly hickory shafted believe it or not. There was no driver, no hybrids, no gap wedges - just an old persimmon wood (4 wood I think) and a collection of blades. They were rubbish but they served one purpose and one purpose only - to refine my swing and teach me how to get round a golf course. My point is - you're learning the game - you only need one club for the time being. Seve learnt the game by hitting stones with a stick!!
My advice to you - choose one club (seven iron for example)from your set and keep hitting it. Your main aim at the moment is to get a reliable swing - ANY club can help you do that. Once the reliable swing is there you can start trying better clubs - maybe even custom fitted.
A lesson or two is a must also. Make sure you've nailed the basics.

Good shout on the club size/weight thing. It might be a bit big and heavy. No shame in getting a good ladies model that will suit your build a bit better although you might want to avoid pink shafts or head

I got a second driver for Christmas when I was 12 and still have it after two years. I probably would recommend a driver for Christmas as it'll make you seem very impressive blasting the ball past people your age who dont have a driver! (I have very fond memories of this!) :D

You should also consider getting a lob wedge or putter instead.
