I have been struggling with my long game for a long time now. I got asked if i would partner a mate last saturday in a 36 hole forsomes medal comp as his original partner had to pull out. I agreed as i have been playing ok. WRONG. I really felt good untill i hit an awful second shot on the second hole and dumped him in the sh*t. From that shot on i played with no confidence hitting too many bad shots and i really felt i let him down.
My driver when i get it going goes a long way, but whens its off it kills me as i`m all over the place.
My fairway woods and anything over a 7 iron were just as bad.
The only saving grace has been my sort game, 120yds in, it has saved me so many shots. Around the greens im very good and my putting is very good.
So wenesday i bit the bullet and booked a lesson with our pro Lee Scarbrow, something i should have done months ago. So today went down the practice ground at 4pm with the man. Remembering my set up from past lessons, he gave me a 6 iron. I hit a low hooker.
"Is that the shot youve been hitting?".
"Yes, and a weak pushy fade".
"This will take 45 seconds. Hit another".
Same shot.
"Right, posture is excellent, feet good, head good. Your problem is your taking the club away with your hands and arms and not turning your shoulders, youre getting very cramped. Have the feeling of having your left shoulder pushing the club away over your right foot".
Ok. Swish. Bloody marvelous.
" Move the ball slightly more forward and bring your hands a little further back. Excellent. Hit".
Towering 6 iron. Towering 6 iron. Towering 4 iron. I had been down there 1 minute and he had sorted me out. Must be the shortest lesson ever. Went out and played 11 holes, 2 under par! Why had i left it so long?
Has anyone else been that fed up with their game only to find its something so trivial it can be sorted in less than a minute?

It is fantastic when you find someone who knows what their doing, can impart the info across to you well, and it all comes off.

I remember years ago seeing a local assistant pro for some lessons, we got on really well, still do, and he could do wonders for my game in half an hour, he was absolutely fantastic.
Sadly for me, he quit Golf and when to study to be an Architect.

As yet, I havent found anyone else like him locally to me, but if you can, it is a great result, and can work wonders for your game.

Id get some regular lessons booked in if I were you, and watch your Handicap tumble.

I've had 2 lessons in a month now and feeling alot more confident for it. Just a couple of things needed correcting but it needed someone to show me.

Any who hasn't had a lesson and is thinking about it should definately go and get a few.

I've had a couple of pro's who have identified a problem in less than a minute, getting the cure to be longer lasting than the end of the session is the problem.

and pigmeister, thanks for publishing the fix, that's something I keep falling into.

As regulars will know I've been with my teaching pro for a couple of years and got down from 20 to 12 and remodelled my swing from a very upright one to a more solid and rounded version. This year we have been focussing on the short game from 100 yards in and it has made a huge difference. He is a great teacher and explains things simply and because I am very much a feel player and know how my swing should feel as opposed to where I need to be technically at any point, he gives me drills to get the sensation we are looking for and a better result. Consequently when I'm on the range I can tell if I'm swinging well and its easy for him to give me a 30 second refresher. Top man

Yes I know the feeling,
last year distance ok but every shot going to the left, not a slice but straight left.
Jammie stood behind me for a few shots then said standing to close gave me the cure and let me get on with it.
Still use it as now tend to be to far away and fluff them at times.
30 seconds but worth it as now they fly straight if i point in the right direction but thats another matter.

My wife bought me a series of lessons for my birthday. The best golfing present I have ever had. The lessons began in March and I have booked the fourth for this Wednesday - so I have been able to choose the slots to suit the slow way in which I get to work on things. All of the lessons so far focus on the short game. My chipping and pitching have really improved and I am confident that my putting stroke is now much more solid. I used to play off 13 but had gradually slipped back to 18 at the beginning of this year. Although progress is slow (you have to shoot 40pts to get cut at all at my club)I am gradually getting better, the hcp is falling - and, most importantly, I am really enjoying golf again because I feel I have something to work on every time I get to the course.
I am fortunate that my pro speaks my sort of language (he doesn't over-complicate things) and he is always willing to listen and help out. He's going to help me out of bunkers next - I've been playing for nearly 20 years and have always hated them - so why haven't I been to my pro earlier??
So...as I said - best golf present ever - but not the shortest lesson in the world.
