Short / Medium / Long hitters

In the spirit of the thread I guess a medium hitter (around 230 average) but I don't care what anyone else does. It is about my ball and how many shots I take to get it in the silly hole on each hole. End of

If anyone wants to accurately check their yardages, download google earth. Under Tools there is a ruler facility where you can measure the distance between any 2 points that you click on. Zoom in on your course and measure where your average drive finishes on any given hole. I think a few people might be in for a shock

Just done what you advised mate. cheers, you confirmed what I already knew...

Not a soultion that I can adopt

Just checked using my GPS on the phone and this year, minimal run with the wet fairways i am looking at between 230-260, say a 250 average.

I have always had coments about being a longish hitter, probably only 1 or 2 people i have played with all year have hit past me. My PW is 120-125, 7i about 160.

I was at Direct Golf a couple of weeks ago and their system measured 3 6i shots in a row at 190, 192 and 195... But that wouldnt be anything to do with them trying to sell me new clubs would it... Lol

I came to realise what I can hit well and hit hard are 2 different things. I can hit a 7 iron 140 yds but it is rarely straight. If I tone it down and get 120-125 I normally get it where I want it. I know it means I sacrifice yardage but rather be on the short stuff than rummaging around in the trees 20 yards further up.

There's a practice ground at our place with 150 yards marked out with posts every 25 yds. It's very useful for getting your distances right and not kidding yourself. At the moment a 150 yd carry for me is a 5 iron. I personally think driver carry not total distance is the judge of a short/medium/long hitter, and would say 180-210 S - 210-240 M - 240+ L. I used to hit very low runners with driver with total distances always around 230, but none of them ever carried more than 170-180 so if I was playing over a hazard I'm a short hitter.

I use a GPS watch and often track yardages and the vast majority of people I play with are shorter than they think they are.Especially when getting their reference to 150 markers. People drive up level to a 150 marker on a 400 yard par 4 and think they've hit it 250. They may have, but depending on that day's tee location and the depth of the green they might only have gone 210! Most mid-handicappers seem to carry about 200-220 from what I've seen on comp days.

I'd say if you consistently hit it less than 220 with a driver, on a calm, dry summer day, you're short.

If you consistently hit it over 260 with a driver in the same conditions, you're long.

Anywhere in between is average, I reckon.

Never really though about whats long and whats not. I just prefer to play from the cut stuff rather than the rough.

I know my average is around 245-255, but I think I'm more in the average camp. But when you look at some of the lengths people on here say they hit it wow, better take me some steroids and man up to keep up.

I would only say your a short hitter if you can't reach a green in at least 1 more than regulation e.g 3 shots to a par 4. After all thats what the handicap system is there for to even it out,
