Ok, so after a lot of threads about how far we hit it maybe it's worth looking at how good we are at the short game.

How often do you get up and down from 50 yards out (including sand saves)?

How many putts per round?

How many 10-20 footers do you hole?

How many 3-4 footers do you miss?

My record for last week was about 1 up and down, 38 putts, 1 long putt, 4 missed inside 5 feet:D.

I know that for all these I'm nowhere near where I want to be and yet just a small improvement would make a huge difference to my scores.

So who are the masters of the short game and who are the duffers? Are you Phil Mickelson or Lee Westwood round the greens? Who is the Forum's "Boss of the Moss"?

Lee Westwood gets a bad reputation his short game really is not that bad it just is not as good as his driving or his irons. I don't have any stats for you but I do work on my short game a lot and often fancy my chances chipping in from the fringe or pitching it close from distance. I need to work on my bunker play and putting though to bring it all together.

Last 9 holes I had two sandy pars and chipped up close for two more. I also duffed two and missed two putts under 3 feet.

It is not short game skill... its short game roulette

My chipping is more consistent now in terms of quality of strike but still working on my distance control. My long putting is good but short putts need work. I'd say a work in progress!

Last couple of rounds his has really been my weakness. Struggling for confidence with the wedges in the new iron set I got recently and still not 100% sure of distances for 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 swings on these.

I know its an area that needs work and have a lesson booked.

Got a comp today so will be working on this aspect really hard - fingers crossed but as SB said more roulette than expectations at the moment :p

I think it comes down to straight forward up and downs, and the harder up and downs. Straight forward ones will be around 60-70%. Difficult ones probably down to around 20 or 30%. Folk with a good short game will be 80-90% and 50-60% respectively if not better.

Some days are better than others but I can hold my own for my h/c. This weeks comp I shot 72 which included 3x3 putts and 2 awful failures to get up and down from right on the edge of the green Conversely I rolled 2 or 3 monsters in. It is what it is on any given day tbh

I reckon my pitche shots of 40-90 yards is probably the weakest part of my game and chipping is probably the strongest. Im ok from bunkers, and my putting is poor, but very, VERY slowly improving!

Over my last 17 rounds I have averaged 31.94 putts per round and exactly 2.00 putts per green in regulation, which is pretty awful for my handicap I think...

Had a bit of a Eureka moment recently with it though and over the last 3 rounds since then I have averaged 30.33 putts per round and 1.90 putts per GIR which is an improvement at least!

I make good contact with nearly all my pitches and chips but in terms of judging distance I reckon even Stevie Wonder would beat me hands down.

I can't tell you exactly on most these stats but my short game has vastly improved. Chipping a big area can get it it pretty close now, pitching now gets me on the dance floor. My putting has improve a huge amount since the weather has improved and the greens have dried, only three putted once yesterday but if I can improve reading the line I would of been amazing, most first putts were within a foot of the hole or less. All I have to do now is get to 100 yards of the hole!

This is an area I've been working on lately and yesterday it paid off handsomely.

In last 16 of Matchplay comp and had to give 8 shots to my opponent . I constantly chipped it closer than he did and on 3 holes hit the flag to end up less than a foot away.

Saved best for the last, he was short of our 18th, long par 5 in 4 , 549 yards and I pitched it to a foot from 100 yards with my 3rd :D match conceded 2 up.

Had 28 putts ( including two lip outs) in a round of 77, normally average 28 to 29 per round.

Had a look at the stats for European Tour this evening and the best average for putts in 27 per round !!

All (average) educated guesses...

Up & Down from 50 : 2/10
Putts per round : 32
Holed from 10-20' : 1/10
Miss from 3-4' : 3/10
