Short, Average and Long Hitters

I'm normally content if I make it past the ladies tee :D

Yup, the one piece of gender inequality that I am really really happy with ... you can't hit a lady off the ladies' tees. Okay, maybe if your ball falls off the tee or you hit a vertical top shot ... I'm not saying it never happened to me ... it's just more unlikely and you don't have to pay for drinks either.

I must play with a lot of older people as I would suggest under 190 yds is short, possibly 180, average is 190 - 240yds and anything over 240yds is long. Have a category for really long if you like.

Maybe the cold winds in the NE keep the distances down but anything over 240, maybe 250yds generally gets an intake of breath up here.

Perhaps we also need to look at the level people are at. If you play with a lot of single figure h/c then 280yds may be average. For others it is massive.

So subjective. I played with a society last week in 4 degrees & breeze) and they consider me a longish hitter - Game golf for the round records my typical drives at 218yards for that day which is nothing special and in my opinion probably puts me in the short bracket, edging low end of average.

At my course, played a round on Friday with one of the 'big guns', terrible conditions (cold, wet, windy) and he was about 40 yards ahead of me. Game golf has me at a typical of 207 yards that day (198 short, 237 long) so he would definitely consider me short in comparison.

I basically didn't get any roll out either day as I either plugged or just popped out of where it landed. So it's also weather dependent.

For some reason I think in good conditions (weather & course), a 250 yard total drive is a good average. I don't know why, but I think that's a good round figure.

I'm an average hitter for a category3 golfer but am aspirational and if i ever make category 2 then i'll be considered short. I've never hit a par 5 in under regulation before and at my place we have 2 x 440 yd par 4's which are 3 shotters for me .

Depends how you measure. I can give it a good belt and have hit a fair few sunday best 300+ yarders in perfect conditions before but if you're talking average it would plummet as they tend to go all over the place a bit. Drives clattering trees 100 yards away don't do much for your average :D.

Some of the lads I work with are seriously deluded when it comes to how far they think they hit driver.
Me,I'm bang average.
Longest drive I've hit measured at just over 290yrd,this was in the summer & the ball landed on a downs slope on the fairway.
A good drive for me would be 240-250.

Depends on your peer group really.

A good carry for me now is just over 250 yds. Playing with similar age club golfers, that's possibly quite long, but playing in pro comps, often with players 20 yrs younger, I'm often shortest off the tee.
Never looked forward so much to reaching 50 :)

In summer:
225 short
250 medium
275 long

Winter
200 short
225 medium
250 long

Gamegolf is a bit of a killer when that 300 yard bomb turns out to be a 260 yard punt

My Average with my current Driver is 227yds according to Game Golf, with my Sunday best, downhill, wind assisted, once in a lifetime of 310yds.
I would say my average is on the low side.
