Shanghai Masters...

What time would it be on? would being in shanghai mean its in the middle of the night or something? I agree though its odd that a tournament with al lthe worlds best players has no coverage

This is china we are talking about here. The same guys that had a train disaster this year and instead of investigating, pulled the trains off the viaduct and buried them where they fell. Turns out two bodies hadn't been recovered and they fell out as the trains were being rolled into their ditch/grave. They then commanded the media to not overly broadcast it and to only use the glorious headline that they supplied. Madness.

Apparently it's an unsanctioned competition set up by IMG. Therefore not part of the the PGA package that SKY broadcast.

That would be why then, I read somewhere that it has either the biggest purse or the biggest winners cheque so it gets a lot of the top players

Keep wearing that tinfoil hat! ;)

it is only a 30 man field so the big purse is gonna give everyone a bit of cash regardless of how well they do

If this tournament continues unsanctioned I hope it continues without tv coverage or world ranking points. Its not as if China goes without the chance of seeing these players. There is the Chinese Open, HSBC Champions and the World Cup that gets played there.

Big cash cow for all involved.

If these guys really wanted to play this week they should be in Spain.

Money talks. I wouldnt complain if it was in the UK. However, the "emerging markets" seem to be getting more and more events as hey are willing to stump up the ££££. It's not just in golf, India are hosting the F1 this weekend !!

I've no issue with where the tournaments are held.

Taking it to the extreme, how long before companies such as IMG start organising a 'rebel tour' or indeed bully the PGA/European Tours into sanctioning such events therefore further demeaning events such as the Andulucia event being played at Valderamma?

The other side of the coin is the guys that are struggling to keep there cards have a better chance of earning a bit of cash to help with that.

Thats true Chris but when the 'better' players are being takenelsewhere to play in non counting events how long are sponsors going to continue putting money into events.

Of course there is no guarantee that if this IMG thing wasn't on Westwood, Harrington, Monty et al would be in Spain but there's a good chance they would have been and it would be even more watchable.

I've always had the feeling its a bit of an end of season jolly for the IMG guys and the purse is basically their annual bonus pot if you will. As IMG have done pretty well over the last few years its no surprise the first prize is so big but I've no concerns about them wanting to make it into something it isn't.
