When I bought my wedges, I also ordered my irons. My pro who fitted me recommended getting the same shafts in the wedges as I did in the irons, so I did. I'd only been playing 2 months and knew relatively little.

I'm hoping to get a lob wedge later in the year before they stop selling the old square cut grooves. So I asked the pro at my club how much it would be with a Project X 5.5 shaft in.

He was confused as to why I would want to change the shaft to match my iron set as a wedge shaft performs a different function for a variety of swing speeds and you rarely it a full shot with a wedge.

So now I'm thinking that there's no point in getting the Project X's in my lob and think for consistency of feel I should probably change the shafts in my other two wedges. I'm a little miffed by it all to say the least.

Anyway, my questions are

1) Do you think I need to play the same shaft in all my wedges?
2) Can you get your shafts changed and get a 'trade in value' for the ones you have taken out (mine are six months old)?

PS I should point out that the pro's are different, one gives me lessons the other is based at my club.

Tiger, please dont take this the wrong way (now your expecting me to say something really insulting arnt you :p) but someone at your 'level' who is still fairly new to the game and still learning probably might not notice the difference too much.

Why not just order your new wedge with the standard 'wedge flex' and see how it goes for a while. Then if you prefer the feel of the new wedge to your older one (Projext X) then you could consider replacing it for a wedge flex. However, if im honest, I dont think you will notice that much difference.

Just my opinion :D

Have to say I agree. Wegdge flex shafts are normally stiffer than regular flex and I can't see that you'll notice any real difference between the standard Vokey shaft (probably a DGS300) and a PX 5.5 - certainly not at the stage you're at now. I can't see it being a problem.

I would look at specialist wedges (50 deg to 60 deg) as separate entities from irons (3-PW) so you don't need the same shafts as your irons. The pitch shot is different to regular iron shots in setup and pace etc.

The wedge flex standard TT DG shafts that come with Vokeys or CG15'S etc are good stiffish shafts and offer plenty control which is what's key with the short game.

I'm with Johnboy here Tiger. I've never known a 28 handicapper worry so much about equipment as you. My advise would be to just get out there and play golf with whatever you've got. When you get to Cat 1 then you might notice the difference between wedge flex and rifle 5.5, but until then, don't cloud your mind with all this rubbish.

Play golf, it is fun you know.

;) ;)

1) Do you think I need to play the same shaft in all my wedges?

No. Forget it. Stiff, reg, "wedge" flex - all next to immaterial. I have three different wedges and three different shafts.....I've never even bothered to look, I know they are True Temper and that's good enough for me.

I bought a bargain "tour" Mizuno wedge in 1995 labelled "dynamic gold - S"....best wedge I ever owned. It did me for ever, until the face became a groove-free rust zone.

Thanks guys. Really helpful comments. When I get the lob I'll just get it in the standard shaft offered and see how I get on. No offence taken but I think the key thing for me is that there's so much to learn about golf and too few places to go for impartial friendly advice.

Thanks again.
