following on from the other post about the perfect driver money no object.

£800 was quoted in the post, but TBH it would have to hit the thing for me for that money.

how much realistically would you pay for the perfect driver?

for me would be £300 tops.

I got custom fit at the same place Alex did about 3 years ago. I spent £450 on a driver and shaft.

The custom fit was OK, can't argue with the figures......however in reality I didn't hit it any better than the £200 driver it replaced. I think it's a little 'smoke and mirrors' unless you've got a repeatable swing and are looking for something specific, like lowering spin no's.

To me 5 yards extra with the same dispersion isn't worth it

I spent £250 on a Ping G30. Don't think I would spend much more in honesty. £300 would probably be my max. If I spent £800 it would be need to provide me food and shelter after HID kicked me out!

£800 quid on a driver for a shaft upgrade ?!?

I don't see how any normal handicap club golfer would need to do that and very much doubt the benefit from a stock shaft is worth the extra cost.

that's where I am. I enjoyed the experience, and treated myself, but it didn't really improve my driving

How inevitably dull and out of context.... and what a predictable author. Should I also drive a 1 letter car as its only legal to drive at 70 mph? If you read the post there is no mention of an £800 shaft.....

Sorry your not getting the attention you like Patrick.. Work a little harder, earn a little more money and things will look less bleak for you...

Being honest though Alex how much more performance in your driver are you going to get ?

Is it going to get you tumbling down the HC list or is it purely a aesthetic thing ?

Is a faster car going to get me to work quicker? Read the post, I do not state what I spent for a reason... THIS REASON! Its ok for other people to have nice things. It was also a gift and at the very begining of the post it states this this is an idea that has been in my head since 2012... It is ok if I realize that dream? I work hard, I look after a wife and child.... Pretty sure I am due what I am due....

regardless of the future performance aspects after reading the original post its an experience we would all take given the opportunity IMO.

perfectly valid question. personally if i was treating myself i'd hit all the previous generation models that were available in a good store and maybe pay £180 tops.

there might be a slightly better option out there for more, but the difference would be marginal, and as an amateur I don't play anywhere near enough golf for a marginal improvement to really amount to anything significant.

Of course the future performance is relevant - you buy a golf club to help you hit the ball.

Ignore it Alex don't rise to it, the posts smack of jealousy to me. Everyone is entitled to spend their money in a way they see fit, be it others see it as a waste or not is of no consequence. I once spent over £4,000.00 on a mountain bike

To answer the OP - I think there are two questions to answer.

How much would I spend on a driver? No more than £200. I managed to get my SLDR and Nike Vapor drivers on ebay at a snip compared to the current market prices (at the time).

How much would I spend on a shaft upgrade? I'd consider paying around the £100 mark if it gave me what I was looking for.

Ok think you need to reign it in a bit -going on about your wife and child is irrelevant

The OP asked a question about shaft upgrades and how much someone would spend on a club - you have taken that personally because you have just spent a considerable amount on a club - the question wasn't aimed at you it was aimed at the forum. If you want to go and blow £800 on a driver that will add nothing to your actual game of golf bar having a pretty shaft then away you go - but that doesn't mean people have to agree with the idea and sit there and go - yeah that's a lovely idea.

Jealous of what exactly ?

It's all about justifiable cost isn't it.....
Plenty on here will spend £500-£600 on a set of irons that won't necessarily improve their golf.
It's about "want" as well as "need".
I couldn't justify spending more than £250 on one club but that's just me.
If someone wants to spend £1000 on one club and can justify it cost-wise then go fill yer boots!
An improved performance is the " need"
How much you spend is the "want"
You don't necessarily have to have both....

Can I just say if you read the post he never spent £800 on a driver.

Fair play to you mate, I couldn't afford it and therefore couldn't justify it. Just like I can't justify a Ferrari. One day when I am earning the money, damn right I would buy it. And I wouldn't listen to people telling me I should've bought a Kia!

He did actually mention £800, but that's not the driver he bought:

“That is your honey” Jason said with a little wince on his face. “That shaft has EVERYTHING in it, every technology you can think of” “trouble is it’s a £400 shaft so an £800 driver” – For the first time my father spoke “WHAT”….

Alex “Ok, have you something with this profile that is a little more…..?” Jason “ Ye ye, I am already looking”.

Down comes the Accra FX 260 in 04 Flex (Stiff) and is duly bolted into the M1 head. It feels exactly the same and has exactly the same result, ripped it down the line, great launch, spin and flight. “That’s your new driver”

If you read it properly he clearly states he didn't buy the £400 shaft, but went for something else which offered the same performance at I presume a lower price point.

Yes
But it would be too easy for some to read the whole thing properly then just quote the facts
Most would have stopped reading after seeing those figures
It's more fun for some just to make something up
