Really looking forward to watching the some of best european golfers play this week (teams below). I'm also going to be interested in how Faldo marshall's his troop's, he always seems a bit insular to me. What do you think of Faldo as a captain ?? Who do you fancy for teh Seve trophy ??

Ryder Cup is bad enough, these extra team events are dull as.

Okay, the Seve Trophy is a bit of a charade as everyone pockets a tidy sum win or lose, but "Ryder Cup is bad enough..."??

I think you may find yourself a little out on a limb on that one - what is the reasoning for your apparently Scrooge-like Ryder Cup disdain?

Furyk, this one has run before, anyway the jist was roughly -
golf isn't a team sport, Tiger/Phil dont give an arse and dont practice for weeks before it, no-one knows Jack Nicklaus Ryder Cup record cos it's irrelevant. Monty harps on about it because he never won any majors. Hyped up by UK media for years cos our boys couldn't win individually (thanks Padraig for amending that). Why are we supposed to support Europeans (Swedes, Germans, French, Spanish etc) when we loathe them at everything else? Culturally far more in common with USA, why are we meant to support Greece or Italy over USA?? Team used to be GB&I, we couldn't win so we 'moved the goalposts' to take in 30 odd countries in order to win, what happens when we lose a couple -do we take in Australia, Japan, South Africa into our team as well just to keep winning?
- Can't you see how ridiculous it is??

The Seve Trophy is good Ryder Cup practice for the Europeans and that's about it. I can't get excited about it. Much prefer to watch the President's Cup, even though that's a poor relation of the one true team event.

As for the Americans being culturally more similar to us Brits !? Yes they may speak the same language but they didn't learn it from us...they got it from the space aliens. I think you'll find a Swede isn't from a different planet...in spite of their lava-eating tendancies.

Birdieman - you seem a bit cynical. Ok, the Americans might not care as much as the could and the European Team is a bit of a mishmash but each year it serves up some really good entertainment. In how many strokeplay events would the crowd start chanting? Hordes of people don't usually come running onto the green in other events either.


The Ryder Cup brings some passion to the game which all too often is inhabited by boring androids...

I'm with you chipin. As for team events - the second best is undoubtedly the Walker Cup. What an amazing one at County Down – true sport and not a penny of cash in sight.

GB & I would still stand a chance against the yanks but it wouldn't be a fair match.

Contrary to birdieman's belief...I think the GB & I thing is a more ridiculous match against the Americans than Europe against them. Why would we match a population of 60m against 300m (most of whom seem to play golf!) The whole of Europe has a more similar population and it's a fairer match.

As for loathing the French, Germans, Swedes etc....get a grip. Ask your typical Glaswegians' opinion on their love for the English and your case falls apart, I'm afraid.

Maybe one or two but probably NONE.

This match is all about commercialism and dragging the seasons end out a few more weeks. I will watch it but its nothing more than a 'friendly'.

Ok, Andy. You deliberately picked the duffers (apart from Greame Storm and possibly Mark Warren)) . There are 7 I can see within both teams who'll probably make the final Ryder Cup team. More importantly, though, it's good practice for Faldo.

Actually, I take that back. I forgot who wasn't playing, e.g. Donald, Harrington, Westwood, Fasth, Garcia, Stenson. Those are 6 shoe-ins for the eventual team.

Granted it's not as good as the Open (my fave Major) or any other major for that matter, but it's a chance to watch some good competitive golf, and if Seve & Monty are involved neither will want to loose !!!

Yes the likes of harrington / Sergio are not playing and are cashing in over the pond but what is their not to like about a tournament like this ??

Phillip Archer!! he was the club pro at Birchwood (a club i used to be a member of) , i've always looked out for his scores since he qualified for the tour. He only just kept his card a couple of years ago , but he's having a great year, a string of top 10's and is 27th on the order of merit.

It's much easier to support your national or international team than an individual who you don't really know. So on that level the Ryder Cup, Seve Trophy et al are more involving and interesing than most Tour events. Plus matchplay is also more interesting than strokeplay.
