Hello all

This is the first thread I've posted on here although I have been reading others for about two months.

Just wanted to tap into some of the knowledgable posters minds in terms of mechanics of the swing so here goes.

Lately I've been hitting my irons pretty poorly. I've had all sorts of problems getting the club square at impact. I've either been blocking them out right or turning it over. Initially I was thinking it was down to grip pressure or how far forward I was playing the ball from in my stance and kept trying all different combinations until I couldn't even remember what I used to do.

Last weekend I was hitting some balls on the field, and getting incredibly frustrated as I felt my game had just completely fallen to pieces. I just couldn't understand it.

Anyway after standing there scratching my head for about five minutes trying to figure out why I was having these problems, I set up a bit further away from the ball than usual. I was really thinking about what plane my swing was on and all of sudden I started hitting them sweetly and straight again. Therefore do people think it's logical to come to the conclusion that the reason I couldn't get the club through square was because I was too close to the ball, which meant my hands needed to work too hard? When I was hitting them sweetly it felt like I wasn't doing anything with my wrists. They were just arriving in the right position at impact.

So yeah from a 'mechanics' point of view do people think I may have solved the problem?

God I hope you don’t all say no as I've been feeling pretty good about Sunday's upcoming round this week. :-)

It sounds like youve started to do something right,it would be good if you could video your swing and put it on and let the experts comment, however im self taught if i have a problem i will keep trying different things until i correct it.The key then is to remember how you did it if you havnt got the mental capacity to understand how you did it you then will need lessons and a pro will tell you where your going wrong.I.M.O.any problem can solved it just takes time and practice and then more practice until it becomes second nature.Good luck sunday.

i'm new to the game but have been told the shaft should be a handwith away from the body and an open handwith for a driver. It could be way wrong and when I tried it like that I started hooking badly :D

I've gone down the self coaching/diagnosing route as I thought I knew my swing pretty well. From my own experience a big mistake and I wrote off most of 2007 tying myself in knots trying to get a repeatable action. Go to your club pro and get regular lessons. Maybe sit down and discuss a some goals and objectives so lessons can be tailored to suit. You'll normally get discounts for booking block lessons.

Other than that video it an post it on here. Wise old heads like Bob will give you some honest feedback.

If I could recommend just one thing in golf right now to someone who is new to the game it would be Stack and Tilt.
The only drawback is that it would be hard to find someone to actually SHOW you what to do as most pro's teach an old style swing that makes you hit a lot of fat/thin/inconsistent shots and doesn't have ONE SINGLE set position that you should try to achieve. :p

Other than that I'd recommend cricket :)

Ditto for S and T, but the nearest coach is an hour away. Currently teaching myselffrom a book. Hitting the ball really well at the moment. My biggest mistakes today were club selection. Kept hitting it so purely I was flyimng the greens, occasionally by 30 yards. Oops.

It's a cross some of us have to carry.

Don't get me wrong, Hywel is a heck of a golfer, and has way more potential than me, but short game is a flair thing, and takes time and practice (forget all this formulaic pelz stuff). Last time we played, his 4i was longer than my driver. I am working on this, as it really annoyed the heck out of me. He was also only 1 shot worse gross. Not good.

I strongly recommend changeing to S&T, for most people I have played with. Don't knock it til you've tried it. It could solve alot of problems, very easily.

Um, you need to google it, but it is a newish view on the golf swing, which eleiminates alot of the moving parts, and busts open alot of what is currently taught as being the ideal.

If you fat, thin, or slice (particularly slice), then all of these can be solved by S&T, quite easily. For most golfers, S&T is way easier to learn, and would give way better results, way quicker.

Got a book on it, see reviews section. Best book I have ever bought. After 20 years playing, it has rethought my swing, and for the better.
