County championship qualifying tomorrow. I entered a couple of months ago knowing that I wouldn't be working and since my handicap met the entry criteria I thought it'd be a good experience.

Trouble is I've been flattened by a cold over the weekend and left exhausted even by a trip to the supermarket today. I'm not in the same league as these girls at the best of times so worried about embarrassing myself over 36 holes tomorrow.

Could probably use a pep talk........ ;)

Head down and play your shots - strange things happen in golf. One of my best rounds ever was when I teed off in a pairs knockout at 8 am, after a malt whisky evening that ended at 3 am.

"Beware the injured golfer."

I've played some of my best golf when I've been "under par," pun intended. Go for it, whats the worst thing that could happen...

Agreed. Go for it and with less expectation than usual you'll have a stormer and more than hold your own for sure. You're playing great and just make sure you take plenty of fluids, food and drugs!! Legal ones of course...

Good luck

Nothing to prove, so go and enjoy it.

No need to be embarrassed either. The fact that you are qualified to play means you've achieved more than most too.

Remember to take plenty of fluids - specially energy/glucose ones - both before and during the rounds.

I would see this as a win-win situation... if you go out there feeling really rough and have a shocker well you know that you weren't at your best to compete in such a tournament so theres nothing to be embaressed about, but if you go out there and play well then you know that a) you can be proud of yourself and b) that your swing is good enough to hold up even when youre not at your best... so just go out there and enjoy it! :)

Had my head down the loo on Saturday and went out and won a club match 5&4 on Sunday. Just go out and enjoy the day. If it helps I was proper poorly (real flu not the man flu type) at Woburn and managed to nobble it round in 3rd place in the morning. OK I chopped like a beginner and felt dog rough all the way in the afternoon but if I can scramble a decent score with my iffy swing then you will be fine

Keep your head down and play your game.

Hope to read a positive report this time tmrw.

Best of luck.

Thanks all, yeah should be a no lose situation I wouldn't expect to qualify even if match fit. Planning to just take it easy and enjoy playing with better players.

Go for FD, I've been wiped out with a heavy cold and chest infection for two weeks now and decided to play the second leg of a qualifier(stupid i know) with little expectations, shot 73 scratch 65 nett and went home and straight to bed, felt so rough all the way round and put no thought into the golf, think it proves that a lot of golf is played between your ears. Enjoy the day and keep us posted.

Good luck. Look forward to reading the result...and hope you exceed your expectations.

I certainly did exceed expectations. It was much WORSE than I expected!

Played the first round but just wasn't fit enough, it was exhausting. And my game fell apart completely - started trying to hit it harder, tweaking my swing from shot to shot, lost my timing. It's a long time since I played as badly as that. Got a bit better over the back nine once I'd given up on the score and started just playing again.... funny how much it's in your head.

Pulled out rather than play the second round, there's no way I could have managed another 18 holes even if I'd been playing well.

Chastened by the experience but I'm sure I'll be back! :)

Hey you tried and that's good enough for me! I was looking at the start list for our County Champs which are on Thursday and wondering if I'd ever have the nerve to compete as there are a few 12-15 handicaps. They won't make the team of course but can win the nett competition.

Well done for having a go.
