Seeking membership near london....

You could have a look at the crown golf website, they may have a course decent enough close to you.

i couldnt disagree with this more if i wanted to. Im currently a member of a swindle based at a crown course. Major cutbacks have seen one of the best pay and plays in the area ruined, bunkers are being taken out because they cant afford sand, pros on the range have had to buy their own nets as crown wouldnt pay for them, even though they own the range, the general course condition is getting worse year by year with less money spent every month, and out clubhouse is pretty much ready to be knocked down.

I couldnt be any more anti crown golf if i tried. The only reason im there is for £60.00 a year i have my back up round on a sunday morning should the boys not fancy playing elsewhere, and it enables me to maintain a congu HC. the staff are good, but the dictation from above is poor.

This is the last season of being there, my scrap mizzy wedge put the final nail in the coffin. i know we have had bad weather but when the bunkers remain unraked to the point where when you try and play from them you destroy a nice wedge, enough is enough.

Played at West Middlesex yesterday as a test run before i sign up as a member and thought i'd let you know my thoughts.

Overall the hole variety is decent in my opinion, and at £12 for a twilight round unquestionably good value.

However after walking off the 1st green we saw 3 or 4 kids on BMXs cycling around the green, back raking the bunker i had just hit out of with ease(!), and in general doing what they shouldnt be.
Aside from this, some of the holes had pretty neglected ground, especially around greens, and the fact you have to cross a very busy road twice to access parts of the course just takes away a lot of what golf is all about for me - quiet relaxing time.
Like i say, very nice course and friendly members, and great for an after work round, but not worth the membership for me as i want a place to play early on the weekends, and it just isnt up to it for that purpose.

the search continues.

oh, and i hit under 100 for only my second ever time, the 1st being months ago. ;)

I've just joined Woodcote Park in Purley and can't fault it. It's not the cheapest at £1400.00 plus £650 Joining fee (which is currently half the normal price) but the course is very good, long and a real test, and the welcome there has been second to none. We effectively had about 8 courtesy rounds as after the first one, which they offered us, we put our applications in and they basically said they would treat us as members while the applications were being processed. I have genuinely never been made to feel more welcome at a golf club.

Sounds like not a lot has changed since the days I played there... Though to be fair the greenkeepers did do their best to keep the course in as good a condition as possible...

Have you tried Wyke Green yet?

Mega Steve I see u live in ruislip. There is a rumour that ruislip fairway has shut down along with another 2 course owned by the company as when I google them it says course is closed and when you ring all 3 courses the number has been disconnected. Do you know anything about this ?

Oh and sorry for hijacking the thread a little bit ;)

Despite living but 5 mins drive from all three of my local muni's I gave up on them a few years back due to total mis-management of the operating companies... Back in the day, when council run, they were all kept in above avarage condition bearing in mind the amount of rounds played there..

Latest I heard was that the council had taken back the running of the courses and this was to remain the case for immediate foreseeable future... Perhaps a call to leisure services at the civic centre might clarify either way...

No haven't given it a go yet, mainly because they haven't responded to my enquiry packed email yet. i thought if they cant be bothered to respond they don't deserve my cash, but i may have to get off my high horse given my limited options.

really considering joining a course less close to home now though. somewhere like sutton green is very nice and you have the option to play 7 other course in the area for free as a member.

i just cant make my mind up if membership is worth it if i will only realistically play 3 rounds a month there...

yeah richmond park are pretty average public courses. good for what they are and the price but very crowded in summer and no facilities other than a small range and chipping area. will take a look at wimbledon common too actually, that one has flown under my radar so far.

the problem is also that i'll play maximum twice a week during summer. i cant take time off work in winter months to beat the light so maybe membership isnt worth it for me? then again maybe ill take a lot more from medals etc than i expect. confusion.
