Parents are goig to have a new front door s thinking of getting one of those video door bells fitted at the same time.

Anyone had one installed and what would you recommend.

Ta.

Not got one personally but from conversations with those with a professional interest I believe the Ring ones have a good reputation. When I did have a brief look they also seem to do one that has a solar panel mount so no wiring or battery issues.

Do they have any other smart technology, if so it makes sense to try and stick with the same ecosystem where possible.

I have a nest doorbell, partly because I already had some other nest kit, and partly it had some functionality I liked outside the standard offerings - constant stream of video (rather than just when motion detected or doorbell pressed, and facial recognition (so if a stranger kept returning it would identify them as the same person when logging events). The downside is you have to have a subscription, with cost varying from £2-£25 a month (slight discount for annual payment) depending on how long you want your video to be stored on the cloud (from 2 days to 1 month) - you can download any video you want to keep permanently, so this feature is mostly depending on how often you are away or unable to review events and download clips of interest.

The installation is not tricky, but I installed it myself and it was not as described in the instructions. Happy to provide my take on that if anyone is interested.

We’ve got a new door being fitted in the next few weeks, getting a Ring Doorbell. Going for the one that replaces the peephole.

One thing to consider with these doorbells are additional costs. If you want the bell to operate as a normal bell you need to invest in the Chime add on. Without this it just rings your smartphone so if anyone is in who doesn’t have that set up they may not know anyone is there.

The other thing I’ve read is that if you don’t have it hardwired the rechargeable battery doesn’t lost nearly as long as it says and you’ll need a second battery so you can swap them round.

Ring are ok. They do decent enough job however they do get condensation on the lens so some nights can be next to useless

Good deterrent though

Nest will connect to a standard doorbell chime and operates off a transformer, so is always powered.

Even if Ring can't operate a normal chime, would at least expect it to operate off mains power, is this not an option? Surely the risk of not having mains power and that the battery running out when away is a big flaw?

Ring can be operated via hard wired ...not really a flaw as you can monitor battery usage on the app and you get told at 19% to change battery (by email) which will last at least a week

I switched batteries wednesday evening .. so it's now Sunday 96% left

Use a 2 battery system, one charged one in unit

Remember if you ain't got a mobile signal it wont work and there can be a significant delay.

Ring with camera also needs you to pay a subscription if you have a camera and want to store the recordings.

OK if you just want to see whose at the door when you're home - a simple security camera can do that just set it to notify you 'on alarm'.

I have a ring door bell and I'd recommend it.

I like the potential it unlocks if you know your way around apps

When our ring goes off all the echos announce someone at the door .. saves having more than one chime

I also use IFTTT (if this then that) to write things for it to do

Basically if the door bell is pressed one of my porch lights comes on for 3 mins

Stops Amazon buggering off before I'm at the door

When away can turn these things off ofc and set other bits to do instead.. random flickers of lights etc
