Searching for ball/identifying

I would NEVER agree to no gimmees before a match. It's all part of the game, I'd be quite happy to think I'd messed with someone's head in a matchplay!

You never specified matchplay in the post I answered, you made a general comment regarding gimmies!

However the Rules do not permit players to make an agreement, prior to play, to waive the right to use a rule.

I agree you are technically correct on this concerning gimmees but presumably a player is not prevented from making a statement of how they intend to operate an optional variant of a rule? Along the lines of "l will not be conceding any putts no matter how short, and i will not be expecting you to give me any either." And then if the other responds "then l wont be giving any". I dont see they have agreed to waive a rule - rather that they have stated how they will operate within the rule?

Thoughts?

I see what you mean from the re-visit to the wording of 1-3 I should have made in the first place:

Players must not agree to exclude the operation of any Rule ........

That has to include permitting as well as prohibiting rules.

So it's potentially that important in a game we play for fun and not for a living that you would be prepared to find his ball in what could have been a totally unplayable position which is why he wouldn't want to look for it but you would have been pleased you found it so you could win, even though he was 3 off the tee!

Wow, is winning that important to you....

? Yet on another thread you didnt want someone to come on to the green before you putted because to would take away your advantage of possibly winning the hole ? Winning that important after all ?

You'll note that I said I was one down playing the 18th and not all square or one up and that it was an important match (they are very rarely important but they can be). That was intentional. I would not want to win a match in such a way - but I might want to take it to extra holes - depending...and I would still have to do my bit to win the 18th to take it to extra holes.

If you can't win the hole of a fella who's 3 off the tee, you probably don't deserve extra holes :D
