Had a fantastic away win today in our scratch match.

Leading the foursomes 3-1 after the morning session, it looked like we would get a comfortable win, but some of our top players lost early on in the singles and all of a sudden the win was no longer as nailed on as it looked.

I'd put myself out 7th, and when my guy behind me lost 7&5 I knew the result was going to come down to my match.
It had been a ding dong battle, with me going 2 up early on and then getting pegged back. When he holed a 25 footer for birdie at the 15th to go 1 up, I knew I had to dig deep.

I birdied the next to square it again.......

Their captain was out in the buggy and let us know the results up ahead........they were winning the singles 4-3......if I lost my match we would finish 6-6.

The 17th was a 230 yard par 3..........I knocked it onto the green and he was just short. I went on to win it with a par.

The feeling of relief that came over me was immense. I had just won the match for us!!

Unfortunately, I took my foot off the gas and he won the last, but the half was good enough for a 6 1/2 to 5 1/2 win.

To be honest, I don't think my guys had given me much hope against this opponent as he was a 4.8 handicapper, and playing away, they weren't too hopeful.........so sitting on the patio watching us play the 18th, when they saw me mess up the 18th, they feared the worst........the look on their faces when they heard I'd pulled off a half was a joy to behold.

Sorry about the long post, but I'm sitting here like a cat that's got the cream.

Thats 2 wins from 2 now and a very elusive away win. It's my first season as captain and a lot of people at the club don't think I should even be in the team, let alone captain, so the start we have made feels very, very sweet......cheers everyone.....

good win, well done. Bit surprised your guys didnt give you much hope against a guy only 1 stroke better than you on h/cap:confused:

Well played sir, every right to be chuffed!

Can I just ask, why do some at you're club think you shouldn't be in the team? Bit of the green eyed monster?

I can empathise there, as at my first cub I started as an 18 h/capper and through hard work got to 5 in the first year, but many saw my shocking games including a spell where every, and I mean every iron was a J arther or thin, so when I worked in all weathers to get to 5 and get in the team they only remembered the poor player and high h/capper. Won my first match 7 and 6. Let your clubs do the talking and the naysayers will soon be enjoying a slice of humble pie.:smirk:

Last year my handicap had crept up to 9.4 and my form was erratic......even though I got it down to 5.3 this year, in a lot of people's eyes, they still see and remember 9.4.......

My job is to keep proving them wrong........that half today and the start we have made in the league is doing the talking

I can empathise with your empathy!!! :whoo:

Sorry if I'm being a bit thick here as usual however by my arithmetic you got a half and not a win?

I got that bit, just assumed from the title you won. Great feeling to play your part in a team victory.

It certainly felt like a win after being 1 down after 15..... Would have really loved to have gone on and won my match instead of halving it, but knowing that going 1 up on 17 had won us the match, I lost a bit of concentration on the last....

I did win in our foursomes match in the morning though....... :)

You're right though Craw...it's a great feeling..
