Scrapping the toss in cricket

The ECB are looking at scrapping the toss for Div 2 matches next year. The aim is to encourage counties to produce wickets that are less geared towards their own team. The away team would have the choice of whether to bat or field first of all. Takes away the 50-50 gamble that you can currently have. I like the idea. In a test series you could alternate, the away team choose first.

for county games that sounds a fair decision to me ,as for test matches it wouldnt work as it would give the home team a big advantage when its their turn to chose ,the pitches would be set up for them totally.the flip side is that the tests where the away team chooses the pitch would be set up for a draw every time .

Scrap the toss and give the choice to the away team. That will put an end to doctored pitches once and for all.
And whilst we're on the subject of really sensible logical moves in cricket, get rid of KP and Boycott for life.

I've long thought that the toss in world class cricket is pretty archaic, especially on occasions when it heavily favours the team that gets the call right.

In any series I would like them to have a toss at the start of the first match and then alternate choice of bat or bowl

Just a cop out from the ECB as they dont manage what pitches are produced well enough currently so they try and remove that responsibility

Not hard for them to issue a clear set of guidelines and then police that, fining the counties that contravene with points/money as required but that would be far too straight forward (and require them to actually do their job!)

The problem in cricket is not that teams develop pitches that suit themselves too much, that is home advantage afterall, but that too many pitches are produced that are so geared toward the batsman that it is almost unbelievable. Produce a pitch in county cricket where there is a result inside 3 days and the pitch inspectors are hovering. Produce a pitch that produces 2 innings of 600 plus and the pitch inspectors couldnt give a hoot.

Produce a pitch that produces 2 innings of 600 plus and the pitch inspectors couldnt give a hoot.

Wouldnt disagree, one of the biggest issues the games has these days is the complete balance between bat and ball for me, just doesnt seem to be seen as an issue to the powers that be. Give me 140v140 rather than 240 v 190 in a t20 every day

It's not the coin toss at fault. Decent teams prevail the majority of times. Examine the real cause, this being the pitch preparation and negating the bowlers. Produce pitches that are reasonable contest between bat and ball and the coin toss goes away.

Current India v South Africa test match is a great advert for scrapping the toss. SA 79 all out with only 2 overseas of seam bowled in the entire innings on the 2nd day of the match!

No wonder India cannot compete away from home playing on sand pits like this.

Giving away team choice of innings would mean the pitches were at least prepared better than some are at present since home team would not want to be batting last on a total minefield.

I watched i bit of it first thing and it was mentioned the India's 215 on FI was the highest total scored in the series so far......
