I've just picked up my new putter - the cameron newport two mid slant.

The salesman has told me to add a two tone oil to the inside of the head cover to prevent rust (to the puter..not the cover :) ).

Any thoughts?

I'll be early to the course tomorrow to start working on the practice green. looking forward to it already.

It will rust unless you dry it and oil it after every use. Johnson's baby oil is probably the best thing to use, and it is a good idea to apply a bit to the inside of the headcover.
I can't claim to be a caring Scotty owner though, I have let the sole of mine get very rusty.

What finish is the putter?

If it is a Studio Select, which is a Pro Platinum finish, you don't really need to do this, but you should avoid putting the putter head wet into the headcover.

Older Black Oxide finishes like the original Camerons and Circa 62s will rust if not oiled occasionally.

Its the new Studio Select, its cost enough so i'll be looking after it. I'll give it a dry after the greens and try and keep it nice, providing it behaives of course

After reading a few posts on shoes i think i'll take more care when i get a new pair of them too, mine live in the boot!

Ah it’s made with free cutting stainless. In loose terms, that means it’s more susceptible to corrosion while being easy to machine…mill.

I honestly think if you give it a quick wipe/dry after each use there should be no problem. Putting it into the cover wet is not the thing to do though.

Any black oxide (carbon steel) putter will rust if it gets wet, including the snazzy putters made by other makers.

Pro Plat finishes are much better for the damp UK. Try not to get too many dings or dents, as they can disrupt the finish and let moisture in.

Nightmare to look after, even the Circe ones which take less looking after. This is one of the reasons they are for me not worth the cost, why not make them less maintenance??

Yes! Putters have crap rusty shafts as well.

And before you say I don't look after my kit, I clean after every round and use the Yes! putter wipes and WD-40.

why use WD-40? waht does that do?

Seems a bit of an effort on a supposedly top end putter. I've not heard of any other high end putter needing such maintenance. I understand the need to dry it after each green which I do anyway and I always take the headcovers off my irons, woods and putter after a round but never heard of oiling them

all putters made of carbon need oiling. i had a carbon tp mills and after every round id dry it, put oil on it and also squirt some oil inside the head cover. if it was pissing down during the round id also dry it after every hole, because they can easily start rusting after half an hour if not cared for properly.

the rust isnt a bad thing though! some people prefer the feel of it even though it doesnt look great. i know that david mills (the maker of tp mills putters) plays with a rusty putter because he loves the feel it gives.

It's just because they are made of superior quality steel.
If you had a Ferrari, I expect you'd have to look after it a bit more than a Skoda.

hehehe

I have tried them, they are not "superior quality" to other makes, if that was the case you wouldn't have to take care of them like babies. I now look at a club including irons on what shaft they are (regardless of the CF argument). I find TT rust easy and Nippon though not to my needs least likely to develop pitting within six months. I know AWT are the same as Nippon in regards to maintenance, so its one of the reasons I shall be buying Ping.

Whether you like Scottys or not is a separate question. Get a 2008 TM Kia Ma and wet it, and it will rust. So will original Circa 62s (2nd gen are much better).

Pro Plat putters (silver colour) and the new California series should be fine. Studio Design from a few years back are finished in 'Black Pearl' and are somewhere in between.

Is this scotty carbon steel....I dont think so.

Tommo

The carbon steel are usually finished in black oxide (also known as gun blue), so the last Scotty like that was the first generation Circa 62. For the second year, they changed the finish on the Circas.

Taylor Made Kia Ma was the same carbon steel/black oxide finish.

The Studio Select are stainless steel, and are pretty durable, and do not need oiling, just keep them dry.

If you want to check, a magnet will stick to carbon steel but not stainless.

The studio select is stainless, and bomb proof. That's one of the reasons I bought mine.

My circa 62 has the black oxide finish, and rusts on contact with moisture. Even when newly oiled.
