I visited Scotland late last year and played five entertaining and very different tracks along the oft-ignored North East shore: Nairn, Nairn Dunbar, Fortrose & Rosemarkie, Castle Stuart and Forres. It was a very interesting mix played over three days.

The article (A Golfer's Guide to...) is near the back of the mag (page 129), but if anyone wants to see further pictures of four of these courses - it was lashing down all day at Forres and the camera never left the bag - check out:

Was Castle Stuart not open?

No flags out on any of the greens that I can see!!!

One question, why did you go there in winter?

All those courses would have been on winter layout and miles shorter and i would have thought Forres very wet.

Would you not have been better off between April and October?

I think Castle Stuart closes on the 16th Nov or thereablouts.

Probably for better value green fees, drier than inland, costs, time off etc etc.

We weegies often flock to the coast for drier more playable courses in the winter time.

Technically the course was closed (I only contacted them the day before) but they let me play certain holes and walk the others where maintenance was ongoing. And the way I play, flags are the least of my worries.

Yea, April to October would have been better, but part of the goal was to see the Northern Lights... at least that's what I told my wife.

Besides, I had glorious weather for four rounds - I played 54 holes on the first day and while I practically finished my first round (Nairn) before sunrise the other two (Nairn Dunbar and Fortrose) were played in perfect sunshine.

Mybe its just me, but i can't see the reasoning behind reviewing courses in the north of Scotland, when one of them is closed for winter main and the others are all on winter short courses with well forward tees.

You might have had nice weather, but what if it were not, reviews with winter greens?

Def, don't know how he managed 54 in a day, its not light till 8.30 and dark at 3. mind you i can get around most courses at that time of year in 2 hours as they are so short.
