Went for 18 holes this morning and decided to use only a half set of clubs. Had read an online article in which a coach suggested this every so often to improve shotmaking

Driver, 3 hybrid, 5 iron, 7 iron , 9 iron, 52 deg wedge, putter.

I ended up with a 72 gross ( par 70) this is my best score of 2012. To say the least I was amazed. Had played on Wednesday with all my clubs and had a 77

Didn't miss my 3 wood or 4 iron in any way. The 6 and 8 iron would have been handy but just went a club extra and hit it softer. Pw and 56 deg I managed without

It's got me thinking do I ever again need my full set :)

Anyone here ever tried playing with half set? How did it go?

funilly enough, i played with a young lad at club champs.. wasmt a long hitter as he was 14, but very consistant.

so med and my normal playing partners are goin out on tuesday armed with a 7 iron, wedge and putter to see how we go

Next time out i'm going with-Driver, 3h, 5i, 7i, 9i, SW, putter. Not tried it before, but like the idea, ideally with pencil bag, if it's dry enough. That's some good scoring there too slicer!

I'd advise it to anyone, was a really enjoyable round and just a change from the regular rounds. Gets you thinking about shots in a different way.

I'd a pencil bag with the 7 clubs, 4 balls, few tees, glove, waterproof jacket. Nice light way to travel!

If the truth were known, anyone who plays regular at their own course, will only use half their clubs. You can sit down and actually work out which clubs we use on each hole, and think you'll find we don't need half of them.

Playing elsewhere means you carry everything so you're never caught out. It probably has something to do with being lazy as well, as I can't be arsed taking a few clubs out of my bag when playing my home track. You just know you'll forget to put them back in when you go elsewhere.

Monday night I went out with the intention of just playing 9 holes with driver, 5, 7, 9, GW and putter. No laser or GPS.

Ended up playing 18 in about 2.5hrs scoring 77, and that was with a double on the last because I couldn't judge the distance in the gloom.

Very enjoyable but I'll stick to my full set for anything that matters.

I have been considering getting a pencil bag and using a half set when go for few holes in the evening. 3-wood, 3i,5i,7i,9i,SW putter. I have had half decent rounds when playing in 3 club challenges before

I mentioned in a post some time ago that one of our high handicap seniors scored 45 points in a comp limited to 4 clubs and a putter. His previous highest score was 36 points with a full set.

There was about 16 pages on the forum last weekend on this subject started by someone calle Patrick. He got an absolute slating and now here's a group that are fully endorsing it.
I think it takes you back to the basics and makes you think about the ball strike which ultimately is what the game is about. Anyone with a handicap over 12 does not need all the clubs and junk that many carry around. I know that there are many on the forum that will disagree with this but I really believe that this is the key to unlocking your feel for the game if you have it in you.

Not for me. I'd rather have the full range of clubs. No guarantee I'll hit them well but I'd rather have the right club for the right distance and not have to manufacture something.

There are a number of 4 club etc events at our place and so ample opportunity to play a "competitive" round that was but I'm happy trying to do the right things well with the full set

I say well done to you. :)

t.b.h. I've always considered playing with only half the clubs exponentially more difficult as the h'cap get lower.

Most people off higher h'caps could do just fine with the same set up you used. Off 6 or whatever, it seems very impressive.

It was a good score, you'd have done it with any amount of clubs by the sounds of it. One of those days? :)

Oh, just to add some controversy/debate...

"Had read an online article in which a coach suggested this every so often to improve shotmaking"

I've never really believed in this for us regular mid-h'cap players. Hard to explain why.....

Yes it probably was "one" of those days. Will try it again next week and see what results I get

Hello

As you can all see from my signature below, I only play with seven clubs. I've been doing this for over 5 years and I consider myself to be an authority on this. There isn't a length within my range that I can't cover with this set and I also believe that any more in my bag would put me at a disadvantage.

I raised this on another forum a month or so ago where I took only my even irons out so my bag was 3W, 4, 6, 8, 56, 60 & Putter and I had an excellent knock.

I think it made me concentrate much more and work on closing and opening the face of different clubs to achieve different shots.

I think that's good in practice and helps you to develop your game but then like Homer, its a full bag for me.
