For most of this year playing partners have enjoyed nick naming me as Wild Thing! Mainly down to the fact I hit a long drive but only have control on 50% of the drives I hit the other 50% go well wherever the trouble is most of the time resulting in double bogey or worse !!!

Well if had a pound for every time someone has said to me “ you don’t need to hit driver just keep it in play” I would be a rich lad, Now to the point in my last round I hit nothing more than my new Nike rescue 4 iron and recorded a 71 (2 over par) my best round at my course hit all par 4 fairways in reg! That’s why from now on I will be saying no to the big Dog(well in most cases any way)

That's why the brain is the 15th club in the bag mate, get the biggy out when you need to and can take the risk, keep it in play for the rest and watch that handicap come down.

If you can get round without; stick with whatever works.

I couldn't get round without, so it's my #1 club.

Its definitely needed on some of our holes and fortunately we are on talking terms at the moment. However with the dry fairways I'm having to use my 3 wood a lot more recently and it has opened up some interesting options on some of the holes.

I played at the Glen at north berwick about a month back never played it before and on the front nine never used the driver once out in level par no problem. However got to the tenth thought time for the dog to come out came back in 5 over. :D :D

For me my 3 wood is far more consistent but i only use it as a go to club cos you just cant beat the Big DOG!!!! :D :D

Short course is it? Hard to get on the par5's in two if you're laying up off the tee.... but a good result mate, no shame whatsoever in shooting 2 over par!!

JustOneUk: I think you'll find 2 over gross means he didnt need to get up in 2 on the par5's......if its a true Par 5 thats for the Pro's only.

We only have 1 Par 5 of 529yds, and I have NEVER got on in 2, Period.

Hi screwback, am going up to north berwick in march, The Glen is one im hoping to play, is it any good?

The Glen is definately worth a game chipsandegg.

the first hole is a bit to get your head round when you see it but after that the course is really good. There are some great views as well.

Are you playing anywhere else?

You lost me there...
Reaching par 5's in two is for the pro's only? :D

In my opinion you don't need a driver if the course doesn't warrant it and/or if you decide you don't want to be agressive in your play. The longer you are off the tee the shorter club you're going to be hitting into the green (provided you keep your drives in play). Cutting down to a 4-iron hybrid seems a bit excessive but if you simply cannot keep a driver or 3-wood in play then I guess it's your only option... other than learning to hit your longer clubs better.

I don't even try on our par 5 in two on the green, longer distances = bigger risk, I would rather take a mid iron and lay up because I know I have a good short game and can still make a birdie or par after laying up.

I knock the 4 iron rescue around 225-235yrds which on most par 4's means I have nothing more than around a 8 iron or less in hand. Having said that hitting it on 2 of the long par 4's means I am more than likely not to even get up in 2 however these are both shot holes and at worse it should be a 5.

I will say that there is not a better feeling than smashing the Big Dog right down the center strip but then comes the other issue how many times do you then leave half a shot in which i hate playing !!!

As for length of my course its 6185 however there is 5 par 3's both par 5's are over 500yrds and 5 of the par 4's are well over 400yrds
