If I use the Sandisk software to encrypt a file or folder on a Sandisk USB, can I then copy that file/folder to another USB (either Sandisk or other m'fr)?
If so, will it retain it's encryption?

Are the files encrypted or is the drive encrypted?

Sandisk software (which is already on the USB) can either encrypt the drive or files.
I want to encrypt a particular file and then copy it to another USB. I want to know if it is possible to copy it to a Sandisk or non-Sandisk USB and if encryption is 'carried' across.

If its software based and the file is encrypted then it should copy the encryption. Hardware based tends to work by encrypting the drive rather than the files (i.e you use a passkey or similar to open the drive and the files contained are all open access as the drive encryption has been passed).

Thats not an absolute, of course, as some manufacturers have different models.

Best thing is to try it and see.

I used to use a file encryption program from Diamond CS. It would encrypt anything you wanted to almost any level you wanted and as long as the machine you wanted to open the device/file had that program it could be done.
