Sanding greens is 'standard' maintenance and has several benefits as per the article shown in the link.
What you have to do is meet with the Head Greenkeeper and convince him/her that it is worth delaying their program a few days in order to allow comps to be played with pretty good greens,
At a previous club, Monthly Medals (and these could only played in Summer) were played in the first week of any month (scheduled by the Competition Committee) and guess when hollow-tining and other serious 'damage' to the greens was scheduled by the Greenkeepers! One of my 'successes' was to get (one of the 2) Greenkeepers to delay their maintenance until after the Medals.
