Slow greens

On the first green I wouldn't say leaving it 6ft short was mental just probably hadn't got the speed of the greens yet or didn't hit it pure.

If it was after a few holes then maybe a little more confusing.

Yeah, I didn't mean that was a mental error.... Just a generic Scottish colloquialism! :D

The mental mistake I did make was allowing my bad putting to bother me as the round progressed rather than just resetting and going again on the next hole.

I practice using a metronome app on my phone set to my natural putting stroke tempo. I always swing the putter at the same tempo but lengthen the swing for longer putts, so I count 'one and two' where one is the end of the back swing and two the end of the forward swing. Short putts I swing from inside my right shoe to inside my left shoe at the same tempo, 6/8 foot puts from toe to toe, 10/12 feet putts outside shoe to outside shoe, 15 foot ;hands knee to hands knee (hope this all makes sense) When I walk onto the putting green I click my finger and thumb to the tempo I use to ingrain it. OK, you need to understand the speed of the green to understand how far each swing length will travel but using the same tempo is a great way to control the weight of the put.

Surely a sharp diatribe to the head greenkeeper is the only option :rofl:

It's hard, especially when practice green and course greens vary in pace. Always hard to force yourself to hit it harder and standing wider can feel weird. Sometimes you just have one of those days

Played a medal last night and really struggled on the greens. They were true, but much slower than anything I've putted on for weeks and I just couldn't get the pace. Long putts I felt like I was battering were coming up several feet short. Holeable putts, I just couldn't get to the hole and short putts that I usually putt firmly through the break were taking the break and either missing or just sneaking in. My brain was fried, I was lost on the greens, a shambles! I three putted 5 times, would've got a cut if I'd two putted all those. Frustrating to play well and blow it on the greens.

The only long putt I got to the hole was a 25 foot birdie putt on 18 that I whacked angrily and it was going 6 feet past if it hadn't gone right in the middle!

So, what tips have we got for getting the pace right on slow greens? Hoping for something a bit more practical than "hit it harder"!

More of a better player's problem.

The glassier and quicker the greens, the better I generally putt, REALLY struggle as they get slower and slower. Can't really offer a practical answer, I don't really see it as my problem as long as the very slow greens aren't something I have to play on regularly. Good putters aren't made for very slow greens imo.

Tournament this weekend, quickest and best greens of the year, no coincidence I won it last year.
