After damaging my putter today, I am thinking of going for a putter fitting with a view to getting a new putter.

Has anyone been to one before and what did they think of it.
Especially one in Scotland.
Was the person using the equipment more important than the equipment ?

There's one at our place mate, it's pretty damn good, but only as good as the pro you're using it with.

I found out some really interesting stuff when we last had a session on ours, especially stuff like where you strike it on the face, then why obviously, and how it affects the roll.

Am still trying to learn a lot so find it fascinating.

Obviously also gives you you a level of detail on how you're hitting different putters that you wouldn't otherwise get too.

Despite all that am still pants

#problems

Dare I ask how you damaged your putter ?!

I've been the SAM twice. The results were similar, I guess, they would be, but I had 2different guys doing the testing and assimilated the data and changes differently. There's no getting away from the data though and I definitely have improved since the 2nd session. I think you'll be impressed how the information is so detailed and if you need to make changes you will see the results immediately on the screen

We've got a SAM lab in the loft of our pro shop Alan, I got fitted for my Scotty using it, got to say I was impressed with the info you get, almost like trackman for putters.

Was a little upset at a long putt that went nowhere and just seemed to hit the ground with it, nothing serious or so I thought, but must have found a weak point and shafted twisted, was able to rectify it a little but needs more work to correct it. Pro had a look and sai because of type of shaft he didn't fancy trying to rebrand it.
Ironically I was going to ask him to alter lie angle of it, but he wouldn't have been able to do that either

Bugger. Unlucky :(

I have used Sam putt lab. I think it was the most useful lesson I have had. My numbers were surprisingly good to start with unlike the real world putting at the time. The pro put me in a setup where the numbers became much worse, but that would have a longer term gain. He called me back for a free consultation where he got me back to where he wanted me and I have putted much more consistently since. Great bit of kit and service from Ed Morton, EM Golf (not in Scotland)

Slightly left field... One of our old pro now does fitting for Edel Putters... I havent had a look at it yet, but I am told that it is as intense and they will customise everything for you... Might be worth having a look at it..

Just on a light hearted change of subject, as soon as you bent that club by hitting it on the ground, other than in the normal course of play, you're not allowed to use it for the rest of the round as you've changed the playing characteristics.
Rule 4.3b.

Just as well it was nothing important then.
Does it matter that I bent it back in to shape:cool:

I don't know how you'd stand in the monthly medal, but for sure at the top level they would get done for it because once it's bent it's bent and there's no way it can be bent exactly back to how it was (over the knee).

as it was not in a competition - doesn't matter at all

if it had been in a competition - as it was not damaged under the 'normal course of play' it would have mattered
as it was damaged in reaction to a stroke & the outcome of that stroke - so not in the 'normal' course of playing a shot

Damage Other Than in Normal Course of Play

If, during a stipulated round, a player's club is damaged other than in the normal course of play rendering it non-conforming or changing its playing characteristics, the club must not subsequently be used or replaced during the round.

Penalty for Breach of Rule 4-3b:

Disqualification.

so in a competition you'd have to declare it to the others in the group & stipulate it as not being fit for use - then you can still carry it in the bag but could not use it

Hey Coach,
I recently had a putting session with John Graham, including a quick SAM assessment.
Very interesting.

hey cool
at Webster?
how did it go - face angle, AoA, comparative takeback to through stroke length/timing ... bounce to true roll .... all good I hope!

any aimpoint with him? or more general stuff?

My main issue was missing what I considered as an unscientific estimate to be about 95% of right-to-left putts short and left. Almost all straight putts that missed also were on the left side, however I've never had a problem with left to righters.

Did some tests, sure enough, everything short and left.
Did some great drills trying to hit the right lip and the ball started to drop.
Did some green-reading and I got some confidence back, was as good as I thought it was a few years ago, ie good.

Then we got to SAM, and sure enough everything was great until the path through impact goes sharp left, hence the ball was normally starting further left than I thought.

Wouldn't have believed it if the SAM didn't show me, great session.

yep, face angle only got to be 2º out leftfield at strike at even 6' it's missing left all day - so arms & hands movement or shoulder alignment? or you have to change ball location? or purely down to perception of line versus 'true line'?

good to get it all ironed out

did you manage to catch up with him on his clinic travels - don't suppose he spends a whole bunch of time back at Rochester always seems to be traveling ... more airmiles than me & he'll have to be going some to do that!

apologies to op for slight hi-jack of the thread - hope you get/got putter shaft sorted out

Eds a great guy, and his set up is brilliant.
