Sad git sharing some stuff off SKY to discuss....

Awww, fancy being away when this one was started. I tink I must be the only one who enjoys all of JO's technical threads (even though I don't always understand them).

So JO, if I normally hit a draw with my longer clubs by aiming square to the target with feet and shoulders, what would aiming left with my feet and square with my shoulders do for me?

Longer putt stats very interesting - I see so many players getting worked up that they don't make 12 footers all the time, when realistically the pros won't either!

What's the stats for putts within 5 foot though - I bet you start to see the difference there!

You could be right ;)

Putting from inside 5 feet

Top is Greg Chalmers: 937 made out of 952 attempts, 98.42% success rate.

Phil M was 40th with 770 from 794 attempts (96.98%).

Top 160 are all over 95%

180th and last is Luke Guthrie who still holed 93%.

PS just noticed one Lee Westwood at 169th with 94.58%.

I reckon I make about 7 out of 10 on the course. :(

That will include ALL putts inside 5' so the 6" tap ins count as well.

Here's the stats FROM 5'. Still very impressive. Surprised at Paddy languishing 2 from bottom though.

[executed correctly] You should still hit a draw but it would be less 'shaped', literally a 1-2yrd draw. If your shoulders are square you'll find it tricky to take the club TOO MUCH to the inside and then swing OUT because your open foot position will create some resistance so you'll swing much more down the line.

if you DO happen swing directly down the line with a square face the ball flight will be a straight shot that turns a fraction left (a pull-draw) which is why they play this shot to a right hand pin, as it brings their ball away from the right hand bunker without having to go over it.

interesting video here about where tiger is (was) aiming when hitting draws/fades!

The more differential you have between the face and the path the more chance there is of the ball 'shaping' properly (think Bubba Watson), the less differential you have, where the face is REALLY CLOSE to the path, then the more chance you have of your shot going wrong and double-crossing yourself. Like everything, it's a balance and a measure of skill. Tiger double-crosses himself too often... he should go BACK to what he was doing before, just a little bit. If you are playing a fade...... make it fade!

hearing what tiger "was" doing makes me feel a lot better about what I do. I move the ball a lot one way or the other. its hitting it straight I have trouble with so I tend to shy away from even trying to do so.

I have hit one ball absolutely straight in my life. as soon as it left the club it felt completely different to any other time ive hit the ball. I knew instantly. i didn't know how i managed it. out of the first cut, from the left, 6 iron, poker straight, never left the pin. never repeated :o

Top of backswing for europro tour player... 178yrd 7 iron (I think)

My back swing is seldom more than that so that's nice to see :smirk:

The thing that strikes me more with this picture is how close he seems to be to the ball - can't be much more than 15''-16'' from his toes, both my regular playing partners reckon I am way to far from the ball a lot of the time - it seems ok to me but must admit I often seem to hit iron shots out of the toe - will try standing a little closer I think :D

Any comments on that ball/feet proximity JO?

Depends on your shoulder plane, if you turn your left shoulder more down (steep shoulder plane) then you can stand closer to the ball, Tiger Woods stands very close.... The 7-iron on the left is barely more than the length of his shoe away from him...

He's standing close to the ball here as well, 14" maybe?
[love the WRONG commentary on this one, the toe doesn't pass the heel at all!]

I have recently started standing closer to the ball and do get consistently better strikes. I do still however still fade mid to short Irons and push anything longer. I have also narrowed my driving stance and this has helped with accuracy off the tee.

You're more likely to hit a straight shot or a fade as it's HARDER to hit the ball from the inside the steeper you get.... (that's why people who steepen the shaft in the downswing (OTT) will hit fades),... unless they early extend to flatten the shaft plane :p

Tiger has an amazing shoulder plane which helps him to keep the club to the inside on the downswing, anyone else standing that close would probably have a mahooosive OTT swing.

Thanks JO. Something to mess about with during winter

Well there you go..... see, I know the same stuff as Ernie Els :D

Actually I know that he talked about it a long time ago.... glad you pay attention!!

Here's mine... (and Tiger's)

now..... where's yours?

If you watch the Ernie video that you posted he talks about staying IN the shot, not coming OUT of the shot..... that actually refers to EARLY EXTENSION...... just thought I'd mention that
