I don't know what else to call it, but I've got some (a lot) rust pitting? on my putter shaft. Does anyone know how to I can get rid of it?.....not the putter.

In short me ole mucker 'you can't' once the chrome plating has been breached and the steel underneath has rusted that's it, the best you can hope for is to clean it with wire wool and oil and then regularly wipe the shaft with an oily rag or as has already been suggested get it re-shafted...

The trouble is, even quite expensive putters come with cheap no brand shafts. It's a swizz, but it's what it is. You can get rid of the rust brie fly, but it's there in the back ground. 30 odd years ago, pretty much any irons over a couple of years had pitted shafts. It was common practice after cleaning your clubs to apply a bit of 3 in 1 with some wire wool.

Why would anyone use wire wool on a chromed surface? All you'll do is wear the chrome away.

Not if you do it properly you won't, Chrome is harder than steel, fine wire wool and oil if applied properly will not damage the chrome plating, the pitting caused by rust is down to poor preparation of the steel shaft before the chrome plating is applied...

Ive done this with Autosol and very fine wire wool and it was fine with surface rust but if its actually pitted the chrome it wil remove the rust but leave very small holes.

Chrome is a porous finish. It is a decorative finish only. Because we like things to be shiny.
It is normally applied over nickel, which is a more protective finish.
