Whilst playing our monthly medal Saturday, I hit my tee shot which may or may not have cleared the trees. I was convinced it had so did not play a provisional ball. When we got to the place I thought the ball was it was not there. After a minute or two looking I decided I had better return to the tee and play a provisional ball. I did not declare my first ball lost I just didn't want to hold up play.I went back to the tee and had to let the group behind play through. I hit my second ball then when I went up the fairway there was my original ball. I did not hit the provisional ball and hit my original ball to the green. I found out today that I have been disqualified for playing the wrong ball and signing for the wrong score. Is this correct?

Once you leave the tee and look for the ball, if you go back to replay, the second ball is not a provisional but the ball in play, you have played 3 and the first tee shot is lost and can't be found and put back in play. You may not have declared the ball lost but in going back to hit another, it became lost under the rules.

had this same issue the other week, player returned to tee, got back and we found his original ball, notbeing able to find the rule in the book, called him back to play the original tee shot, not a medal so no need for disqualification

I must just add that as soon as my mistake had been pointed out to me I posted a note into the comp card box informing the comp sec of my mistake asking him to DQ me from the comp.It was my fault for not knowing the rule, I wasn't trying to cheat.
