I was watching David Feherty on youtube recount a story from his playing days and this fairly simple rules question occured to me:

You have the honour on the first. You tee off and your ball slices away from the fairway and into the woods. The ball hits a tree and bounces back towards you, flies over your head and lands to the rear of the tee box, still in bounds. Whose shot is it next?

I would say whom ever is playing next from the tee as they do not have a ball yet in play, and distance to the hole only aplies once each player has a ball in play

Feherty was apparently fellow competitor with Seve Ballesteros in Cannes; his story suggests that after the event Seve (who was next up) gave way to him.

I have actually done that. I waited till everyone else had tee'd off before taking my second shot from the white tees behind. Very embarrassing !

I to have done this, it was at the help for heroes day at Luton Hoo. Luckily we were the last group off so there was no one else there to see my embarrasment as I played my second shot from 20 yards behind the first tee and from a daffodil patch.

Freddielong is correct.

Rule 10-1.b and -2.b states" After both players have started the hole, the ball farther from the hole is played first". As the second player has not started the hole yet, it is him to play first.

despite the ruling I do think the first player should play through if only to allow his playing partners to recover their composure after p'ing themselves laughing. Only sporting thing to do
