What is the rule for practising a putt after you have finished the hole?

In a medal I thought you couldn't do this and in matchplay you could?

On Sunday a guy I played with missed an 8 footer on the 4th hole. He then finished the hole and after, went back where he putted from and had another go at the 8 footer. I said that I didn't think you could do this in a medal and he said you could?

Just seeking exact clarification?!

Thanks

Rule 7-2. During Round
A player must not make a practice stroke during play of a hole.
Between the play of two holes a player must not make a practice stroke, except that he may practise putting or chipping on or near:
a. the putting green of the hole last played,

b. any practice putting green, or
c. the teeing ground of the next hole to be played in the round,

Cheers KeefG,

Least I know for future now! I didn't think you could do it in a medal (You never see the Pro's doing it either) but obviously you can!

Thanks
