Rule question

cant play the medal saturday as no members will be in our group to mark the card. Ive emailed our secutary for a official ruling as it still seems there is some grey area.

Im 90% sure that you can play the course the day prior, but not on the same day. Gonna check on R&A's site

Let us know as I've had the same situation in a mid-week medal which are run on Wednesday's and Thursday's some times. I had played on the Wednesday with a friend and couldn't play in the medal on the Thursday.

HRC, see my reply on the bottom of page 1. checked the R&R website but cant work out what the official yes or no is due to the wording, ive mailed both the R&A and also my sec to see whats the official decision.

The only thing that could be held against me is the pin positions would be the same saturday as sunday, but given that our green keepers arent the most active, they could still be the same as last week too.

It does seem as clear as mud so, on the basis that if the rules dont say something then you dont infer what they meant, my view is that there is nothing to stop you playing on the Saturday.

You clearly can't practice on the day that you are playing a competition and you are not planning to do that.

It is only a one round competition so the rules applying to 2 or more rounds dont have any bearing on the matter

The Committee presumably havn't ruled that you, either can or cannot practice on the course during the competition (which they are entitled to do)

I can see nothing that stops you playing on the Saturday in the rules but, as usual, there will be undoubtedly something, somewhere else in the rules I havn't considered.

Some clubs when they run a weekend competition split it into seperate days if the playing conditions become markedly different on the two days and effectively have 2 seperate competition winners

In the absence of anything else I can see no problem with playing.

if it is, it could be argued that Sunday is the second round of the competition and therefore play on the Saturday would be wrong.
But, I would take odds that you may well have stirred something that has been lying dormant and that more than a few have played both days in the past.

My last club used to have medals over Sat/Sun. I used to play the medal on Sat, but there was no ruling that I couldn't play on both days, and medal on Sunday.

But then we also used to simultaneously play in the medal, a stableford swindle, and also 4BBB matchplay. This is also against the rules, but we just ignored them. Golf is meant to be fun after all.

viscount, as far as im aware the monthly medal can be played, friday, saturday or sunday providing the card is marked by a valid club member,

Effectively this puts the course out of use for bounce games friday and saturday for anyone playing the comp on sunday. Now we all know you never play the same round twice, overnight rain, different winds, more importantly different swings would all effect the card "on the day"

The only way i could see a rule broken is if for example i played in the morning then put a comp card in after a round in the afternoon, as i would have effectively practiced the exact conditions before playing. ..... its all bollaxe!

I gave my opinion based on a single 18 hole competition where it could be played once only, on Saturday or Sunday

On that basis there is no second round.
