Our club run our monthly medals over Saturday and Sunday.  Now with this in mind I would assume that the tee blocks and pin position must be the same on Saturday and Sunday otherwise it wouldnt be fair to compare cards like for like.

With this in mind would I be breaching any rules by playing Saturday and then entering the medal on Sunday.

We used to do this all the time at my old club - not sure if it breaks a rule but it's not really fair on those playing in the Comp on Saturday is it...?

Well this is what I'm wondering imurg. On one hand you could argue that I would know pin positions etc, but on the other you could say that I could walk the course pre round to find these out.

Obviously the course will play different over 2 days but I'm sure some would take the view that I'm pre playing the course in comp conditions so to speak

Cant see any rule breach there. It would be against the rules to play on the same day (before) the medal as that would be deemed as practicing on the course I believe.

Off top of my head does the rule not state that you cant play the course prior to playing a comp on the day of the comp itself. So you not breaking any rules as far as I would say and if you were surely your club should be enforcing a rule stopping people playing saturday and sunday

Aren't the rules of golf great. Even people who have played for years can sometimes not know where they stand without checking the complicated rules of golf. Had an interesting conversation just the other day with a player when i offered to tend the hole whilst he was on the fringe he stated that would be a penalty. I didn't argue as it was his stroke and i didn't want to distract but i said afterwards the rules say flags can be tended wherever the player is as demonstrated by Phil Mickelson at Torrey pines this year on the 72nd hole. Didn't look happy i had questioned the rules as he understood them.

jim, we had a simular chat on sunday. the rules of golf arent written in a simple format, its all around the houses which leaves too much open to personal interpritation... which is where the mistakes come from.

we had a guy fluff a tee shot which ended up him having he's ball come to rest on the path down the side of the tee, not this guy has been playing 8 years and still wasnt aware of the correct proceedure, is it one club length, is it two, is it nearest point of relief. and so on.... Id love to see the rules re-written in a more direct manor without all the faff that they seem to pad the rule with.

I would think that you couldn't play in the Medal on Sunday, if you'd played the course on Saturday.

You would have to play the medal round first.

I doubt you could enter the Monthly Medal twice.

Now can you confirm that if i play from the yellows and not from the whites (comp tee's) im not doing anything wrong, because if i am i need to find another local course to play sharpish.

You are still playing the course so I think you would be DQ'd. Best thing to do is ask your Pro or Secretary.

The solution is to play your medal round on the Saturday and then you can do what you like on the Sunday.

One of the days has to be 'The Medal' and the other has to be the 'Altenative medal' day surely ?

It's all very well asking the accumulated knowledge of the Forum, but why not just ask your club Secretary or Competition Secretary for a definitive answer. That way 'The Committee ' will have given you the answer you need ;)

And then you can't be in the wrong if you take their advice ;)

True, but there is definitely nothing wrong if you play the medal round on the Saturday and then just play the course in a friendly knock on the Sunday.

cant play the medal saturday as no members will be in our group to mark the card. ;) Ive emailed our secutary for a official ruling as it still seems there is some grey area.

Im 90% sure that you can play the course the day prior, but not on the same day. Gonna check on R&A's site

That's true in the rules of golf, but I think they aren't written with a single round comp being held over 2 days in mind. It would be up to your local committee.

My club does the same and I am not sure what the rule is. Someone mentioned it last weekend so I will need to check as I have done it a couple of times. Never had anything said, but I didn't think anything of it, so never asked.

Taken From R&A

7.1 - Before & Between Rounds

a. Match Play
On any day of a match play competition, a player may practise on the competition course before a round.

b. Stroke Play
Before a round or play-off on any day of a stroke play competition, a competitor must not practise on the competition course
or test the surface of any putting green on the course by rolling a ball or roughening or scraping the surface.
When two or more rounds of a stroke play competition are to be played over consecutive days, a competitor must not practise between those rounds on any competition course remaining to be played, or test the surface of any putting green on such course by rolling a ball or roughening or scraping the surface.

Still a dammed grey area. Will someone write the rules in bloody english!

Now you could view this two ways

1) stroke play comps are valid on that day meaning im breaking a rule.

or

2) because im not entered in that comp on saturday im not breaking a rule.

:D :D :D :D :D :D
