Some clarification please if you can
Rule 5.2b practising on the course before a stroke play competition.
First offence 2 strokes, second offence disqualification.
What constitutes a first offence is it one putt or stroke and is a second putt disqulification or what?
Also if there is clarification written in the rules could you let me know where?
Thanks

"5.2

Practising on Course Before or Between Rounds

For purposes of this Rule:

  • “Practising on the course” means playing a ball, or testing the surface of the putting green of any hole by rolling a ball or rubbing the surface, and
  • The limitations on practise on the course before or between rounds apply only to the player, not to the player’s caddie."

I'd read that as being singular. Playing "A" ball. So mulitple balls or strokes would be multiple offenses. I may be wrong though.

However if there are no intervening factors multiple breaches of the same 'act' are generally subject to a single penalty.
Examples of related acts where only one penalty applies include making several practice swings that touch sand in a bunker

When a player breaches multiple Rules or the same Rule multiple times, any relationship between the breaches is broken by an intervening event and the player will get multiple penalties.

The three types of intervening events where the player will get multiple penalties are:

  • Making a stroke.
  • Putting a ball in play.
  • Becoming aware of the breach. Example: In stroke play, a player's ball lies in a bunker where the player takes several practice swings each time touching the sand. Another player advises the player that this is a breach of the Rules. The player disagrees and takes several more practice swings, again touching the sand before making a stroke. Correctly informing the player of the breach of the Rules is an intervening event and, therefore, the player gets two separate two-stroke penalties under Rule 12.2b (Restrictions on Touching Sand in Bunker), for four penalty strokes in total.
