This weekend we had a 36 hole competition.
Most people would play one round on each of Saturday and Sunday, but the competition rules are that if necessary you may play both rounds on either day.
Because the two rounds can be played any time during the weekend, obviously the pin positions do not change.

One member chose to play both of his rounds on Sunday, but he also played a non-Q practice round on Saturday.
Someone else felt that this was giving him a somewhat unfair advantage, as he would then be familiar with the course setup prior to his first round.
I understand that rule 5.2b only prohibits a practice round on the day of the competition, so you might argue that he wasn't practicing on the day he was competing.
But the competition itself was being run on that day, so perhaps such a practice round is prohibited? Is there any precedent or interpretation that clarifies this?

I would have thought that the club would have a rule covering this as a condition of entering the competition, but I'm not aware of a PGA/USGA rule that would prohibit playing the day before (but hope I'm wrong)

Technically both individual rounds are Competitions in their own right. So practising on Saturday does not preclude playing on Sunday.
His first round on Sunday was of course, not practice.
All players were given the choice so it could not be claimed to be unfair.

I bet there were a few complications at the PSI terminal when two comps were live on the Sunday though.

OK, thanks for the clarification.

Actually the Intelligent Golf PSI seemed to cope just fine.

PS. I was 3rd after round 1, then the wheels came off in round 2. Ended up joint 15th :(

I was searching for that fruitlessly it turned out.

I must say I find searching for Interpretations is far more difficult than when we had an Index to the Decisions
