I would be interested to know various things:-

Is there a criteria - links courses only?

Were they all given the label in the same year?

If not was it only years ago, has any course been given that status in the last 50 years?

Was there a certain royal, who was a big golf fan, who bestowed them?

Anything else?

Depended which Royal tended to play at the particular course - so not all at same time.

Pretty sure there were a few given that Royal status in early part of 20th Century - by a couple of different Princes of Wales. Others were from patronage in previous centuries.

Royal Wellington (formerly Wellington - or Heretaunga) was awarded Royal status in 2004.

They have also been known to lose/drop the Royal. I'm pretty sure it used to be The Royal Berkshire.

The Royal Burgess in Edinburgh was given its title in Sept 1929 by King George VI. He had played and been a member of the club prior to that as did his brother who went on to become King Edward VIII

The Berkshire did used to be called Royal Berkshire but it was never a Royal club so that had to drop it.

As for Royal Ascot...

Ascot Golf Club was founded by local Barrister F.J. Patton in 1887, and given Royal status by Queen Victoria later that year. Many of her children learned to play golf at Royal Ascot and The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, was patron of the club in 1901. Prince Andrew is the current club Patron

Am I right in thinking that if you are a member of a Royal course there is some arrangement to play all the other ones?
