As I've been saying for months, Rory has confirmed he won't be playing at Wentworth.

First nail in the coffin for the event which is sad

We are going on the Friday anyway. Everyone playing will still be awesome to watch, and one of them will be the winner. It's not like they only play for 2nd with him not being there.

He seems to be picking less events every year. Give it 5 years and he'll only be playing the majors.

Yeah even outwith the PGA and time off already this year I was surprised at how much he wont play just in the 2nd half of the season:

  • Memorial
  • week off
  • US Open
  • week off
  • French Open
  • week off
  • Open
  • week off
  • PGA
  • week off
  • Olympics
  • week off
  • Fed Ex Cup
  • Ryder Cup

I guess he knows what he's doing

He'd better get some airtime on the odd weeks he's working or Nike might start to get a bit miffed!

Don't see Rory's omission as anything like a death knell for the event. Plenty of top players still there. Pretty sure big players have missed it in the previous years and it's still going. Can't wait to go on the practice day on the Tuesday

Thanks for laying out his tournaments - mostly 1 week on, 1 week off. Which, is sensible if you're in a position to do that like he is, especially in a Ryder Cup year.

Others don't have that luxury I guess, but works for him. Tiger used to only play around 16 events a year in his pomp if I remember.

Still, considering the low number of events in England, it is of course slightly disappointing that he won't be there.

As well as the next 3 weekends on the bounce. I think this is a pretty sensible schedule, I think, to date, he's played too few with to big of breaks in between.

I don't blame him. The congested calendar this season and tightening PGA Tour rules on exemptions are squeezing these guys' chances to play in Europe.

I agree, the calendar is difficult because of the Olympics and Ryder Cup. He can't play every week.

I would also add I dont think the BMW PGA is the tours flagship event anymore.

As to the comment (not yours) about Nike being miffed, who's to say he's not doing work for Nike when he's off? Nike's only stipulation on his playing schedule is likely to be he competes in enough to retain tour membership.

Agree with this, the European Tour needs to pull its finger out and get a competitive prize fund. They need to realise that that they are not competing with the likes of other decent European Tour events but with PGA Tour purses.

BMW is 5 million euros

Even the small PGA Tour purses are more than that with most being in the 6.5-7 million dollar range aka circling 6 million euros. They need to provide the incentive for the top players to take on the comparative hassle of flying transatlantic rather than the equivalent of hopping on a short plane from one side of Texas to the other.

Not surprised. Believe he's on record as saying Wentworth not one of his favourite courses anyway, especially after all the work that has been done on the West over the last few years. Agree with the comment on the prize fund needing to be bigger, but that could potentially impact on BMW's sponsorship.

Still going to be some top names and very good players on show though.

Fair comment but it seems that he cant even play 2 weeks running never mind whether he can play every week

If it wasn't for the Players, which means he has three on the bounce (but to be fair to him he has just taken three weeks off to prepare for not getting a break for the next three weeks)

Might be smart scheduling on his part with lots of training in between but he seems to be saying he downed tools during much of the last break

He doesn't play the week before the majors and that's kinda where his mind is at this part of the season. It's understandable, many players are the same.
