Rookie - Hello and thank you.

Thanks richart. Were do you play? I think there's some kind of Harry Colt thing where if you are a member at one you can get a guest fee at some others. Haven't had a chance to try it yet - not sure if Wentworth is in it ;)

I agree, he was a top designer. I think we only found out fairly recently that he was involved at Sonning. I have played a few other Colt courses (Blackmoor, Calcot, Brockenhurst Manor, Cuddington). All the holes have a lovely natural look and feel with a sting in the tail if you wander off the best line.

I play at Blackmoor. We have our centenary in 2013.and i think we will be trying to get some matches arranged with other Colt courses that year. I know the captain each year plays in a Colt competition.

Played most of his courses around this area, including Wentworth, Sunningdale, St Georges Hill, and my favourite Swinley.

Played Calcot Park a few times, and caddied for Frank Carson in a Pro Am there! Friendly man but had the heaviest golf bag, no doubt with a couple of bricks in the bottom. Sandy Lyle played as an amateur, and i had never seen someone hit the ball so far.

oooh you lucky thing. Am I jealous!

Played Blackmoor a couple times and won a society 4BBB there. A real gem, remember the 10th and of course the 18th in particular. Cracking holes. Really nice clubhouse too, loved sitting out on the balcony as the sun set over the course.

The 10th is a classic Colt hole with cross bunkers short of the green, and my favourite hole, except when you have to start on it ! Three off the tee is not uncommon then :(

The club are desperately trying to lose the 'hidden gem' tag. We are attracting some low handicap new members who have played the course before, but struggling to get the average golfer, who just hasn't heard of Blackmoor. We are up to 77 in the top 100 courses in England, so that may help.

Like other forummers, if you fancy a game let me know.

I recall playing it the first time, standing on the tee and thinking "This is what the game is all about". Had the same feeling standing on the 10th at Sunningdale Old when watching the Senior Open there last year.

It's a kind offer for a game and when I'm up and running again it's another I'd love to take up. Don't want you to get knocked over in the stampede but if there are any forummers from roundabout who have'nt played it I would recommend they take you up :)

Good luck with the centenary. That could also be a good opportunity to loose the "hidden" gem monicker. Do they still do regional Open qualifying there?

No regional qualifying recently. I think there is a rota. Was told recently that the course may be too short, at just under 6,200 yards. Not an easy par 69 though.

Steve Richardson (Ex Ryder Cup) set a new course record in the Pro Am last year with a 63 (six under)

When do you think you'll be back to full golfing fitness?

Hard to say. My main issue is lack of energy. I had surgery just before Christmas and 6 weeks radiotherapy in the spring and they said I'd feel very tired for a while. They weren't kidding. Also lost a lot of weight so can feel a bit weak (looking good though - back to 32 waist - yay!). Not a lot of snap in the swing - lost about 2 clubs I reckon - 130 to the pin? that'll be a 6 iron then :D.

I managed 7 holes a couple of weeks back and going to give it another go this week. I reckon it'll take a few months to build my strength back up and get over the tiredness. As I'm not a great winter golfer I'm looking at next spring as realistically being able to do justice to the full 18. I'm also doing some research on electric trolleys (hope santa is generous this year :D).

Good luck with it all my friend.

I've just purchased a PowerBug electric trolley - very happy with my purchase.

My vote would be for a Go-Kart. Not a looker but functional, small and great aftercare service too. Where you having your treatment - Royal Berks? If so let me know when you're next in and I'll buy you a coffee.

Yes I thought the PowerBugs looked good. A couple of mates have them. I think AG have a deal on with a Hill Billy at the moment. They were always a good make as far as I recall but not sure what they are like now. Looks nice and compact. Will also see what our pro has on offer.

Had my surgery at John Radcliffe and radio at RBH. Currently having monthly checks alternating between the two. Will be seeing consultant at RBH on 7th Oct, late pm in ENT. Wherabouts do you hang out at that esteemed establishment?.
