RIP Sean Connery

Pedantry alert but Ramius in HFRO was Lithuanian, Soviet yes but not Russian.;) In film it is mentioned as part of the reason he may want to defect.

What other ones were there?
Widowmaker, Harrison Ford? And Liam Neeson had a go at a submarine movie as well.

Since ‘Das Boot’ submarine movies are my favourite genre and Red October is my favourite movie.

Sean Connery only got really good after Bond. Red October and The Rock are some of my favourite movies.

If you haven't seen it the Gerald Butler movie Hunter Killer on netflix where he takes his US sub into Russian waters to stop a coup is wildly ridiculous but still great watch, just dont think too hard! Some excellent cat and mouse sub action/subterfuge. His American accent however is about as good as Dick van Dyk's Cockney one.

There was an interesting rumour going around that Sean Connery's character in The Rock was originally meant to be James Bond (and it does seem to fit the plot) but that the agreement to use the character fell through and hence it was changed to the one he played.

Never heard that rumour about The Rock. It would have fit it, but probably made the movie less good. Bond would have never been in prison for that long. Saying that, they held Pierce in one for quite some time in Die Another Day.

Entrapment is another of his movies I like, but that didn't get great reviews at all, I think.
