Had our wwekly raffle today and there were 20 prizes. Very good you make think. However they were for tickets for The Seniors'Open at Slaley Halll which I understand were received free.

Can anyone confirm that this is the case and if so how would you feel abot a pro acting in this way?

I would argue that most pro's are genuine people and it may have possibly been an oversight as they get pretty busy, however they are human and there will be one or two pro's who maybe leave their integrity at home when they go to work, I have met one or two over the years, but most are not like that.

I would go and see the pro and ask what is going on and get a clear picture before chastising unnecessarily. ;)

No I do not. Perhaps I did not explain myself. Did he receive the tckets for free and then put the tickets in the raffle pocketing ALL the raffle money?

Seems a bit of a rip off to me. However I wait other peoples' comments.

I am not chastising merely asking the question.

Is it right that IF THIS IS THE CASE, he receives ticket for nothing , pockets the money, laughs all the way to the Bank at the expense of members'!

Not sure how I feel on this one. Take another example, if a pro is given a couple of extra clubs free by a supplier as a thanks for good sales or a couple of free boxes of balls, would you object if they were raffled? I would certainly buy a ticket and not object. If it is a prize that I want to win then I happy to take part.

As with anything like this I assume that it is all voluntary and as long as there is no dishonesty about the source of the prize if asked then I cannot see a problem.

I'd rather win something I wouldn't have otherwise had, especially if I wanted it. I don't think I've ever questioned where a prize came from.

I only enter for things I want to win unless coersed by a gorgeous babe in which case I'd buy a ticket for the opening of a car door! :D

Sorry, I assumed that the raffle was organised by the club and not the pro. As said previously if you don't agree with the morality, don't buy a ticket.

I'm ignorant in the ways of the club social scene so i have to ask the question....where do the funds go on these weekly raffles ? Are they ploughed back into the club or do they drop into the Pro's pocket ? The destination of the raised money would have some bearing on people's opinions i'm betting .

He has stated that it is a 'weekly raffle'.

I'd be assuming therefore that it is a club fund raiser rather than something the pro pockets. I think OP needs to find out more details before crying about this.

I dont see what the problem is really.

Ask your self this... If you had won the tickets for a pound, would you still be bothered? Is it just a bit of bitterness? And I dont mean that to sound offending I am just trying to understand where your coming from?

What was the point of the raffle? To support your pro? Do you want to support him? if not why did you buy a ticket?

Does all the money go into his pocket and straight out of the club? Or does it go into improving facilities he uses? Training aids for lessons, maybe more stock for the shop?

Most raffles have prizes that are donated from a 3rd party, its the most effective way of raising money!

The money goes directly into the pro's back pocket. He is paid a retainer of almost £20k per annum plus a percentage of green fees which he does not take. I was not moaning and did not even say I bought a ticket.

Like most items on here my original question was not answered which was did the Pro receive the tickets for free which I now know the answer. Aditionally what use is a Ticket which can be obtained for free and involves a round trip of 250 miles to watch a 2nd rate tournement

That was my point and to repeat I was not moaning merely asking a question

If that's the case I, personally, have a small bugbear I'd like to mention.

Your subject title.

There was an exclamation mark, rather than a question mark. And you mention pros, not pro.

If you have a query about a potential problem with one pro, keep it as that rather than trying to generalise about all pros, which is what the title implicates.

And if you are asking a question rather than stating a fact, the exclamation mark does tend to hide this.

Your subject title implies to me that you are informing us about a situation that all (or at least many ) pros regularly use to rip us off, rather than asking about a one off situation with your local guy.

Small point, but it's small things like this which can get people jumping in defense of their own good guys, and tends to take the debate away from where you want it to go.

It sounds to me as if your pro doesn't take every penny he could from his position, so he'll obviously never make it as a politician. He probably also finds it tough to come up with cheap prizes with good perceived value, which is what a raffle is all about. If I was you, I'd take the bottle of Asti Spumante, and be happy. ;)

Craphacker think if you are trying to correct my grammar please check where the ' is. It is before the s rather than after which means one rather than after the s which means several.
I was not asking a question but stating a fact that it was a rip off.I continued to ask a question whether the tickets were free. The point being that we were being taken for a ride if the tickets were free. I explained the situation with the pro at our club. There was no reference to any other pro in the country.

You continue to make assumptions about our Pro without knowing the facts.

Thank you!

No, I'm making no assumptions about your pro at all.

Yes, I made an assumption about your grammar, which I assumed like mine, was imperfect. I can't see what your ' is meant to be saying ( I always had ' as meaning possion, so it would be something belonging to your pro, if it was meant in the singular )

so I assumed you meant pros.

I didn't say anything until your latter response, coz I thought you were not happy with the responses you got - more assumption from me.

It was not meant as a biggy, even if I do sound like a pompous old git - that may be because naturally I am..... a pompous old git.

When I see a thread attacking all/many pros on the actions of one, I tend to get overdefensive of all the good guys and gals out there.

Sorry for misinterpreting.

:)

FFS its only a £1 raffle not a stake in Captains day prizes. I for one would not enter as I have no wish to watch old men push a ball around, I get plenty of that in the midweek stableford so I wouldnt enter unless the cash went to the club or charity.
