Replacing a single Tyre - same brand / speed rating?

I will chuck a spanner in the works.

What if you have a modern car with all the whistles and bells? Some have sensors that now detect wheel speed/rotation and can independently apply the brakes at different pressures on each corner of the car depending on grip etc. Surely this would mean that you could have any make of tyres on the car as long as the speed rating is correct.

A bit lateral, but didn't Formula 1 teams used to use different compounds/grip of tyre in some races depending on which track they were at?

So when one side is gripping better than the other and the brakes are being operated at different levels, the tyres are now affecting the steering; if one wheel on an axle is effectively turning faster than the other, the car will steer around the slower moving wheel, despite, or because of, your bells and whistles. Doesn't sound too clever to me.

And all the bells and whistles will make no difference to the sideways grip. I'm sticking with all 4 the same thanks.

Thanks everyone - i ended up calling RAC Mobile Tyres and they managed to source the same Bridgestone tyre and change it this aftrenoon. He looked at my other back tyre and decided it didn't need changing, so we just went with the exact same Bridgestone tyre. I was lucky as he could only get one of those tyres, we have otherwise have had to put on 2 Bridgestones of a slightly higher speed rating (W instead of V).

So we're ready for our drive up north tomorrow! I'm just grateful I posted my dilemna here and didn't take the Avon Tyre option offered to me last night.

Thanks again to everyone - proves what a great bunch the people on the forum are!

The stability control system is used to compensate for different grip level across the axle. Simple things like driving over a wet manhole cover can kick it off. 2 different tyres is a similar situation, the system would just be working a little more frequently.
What might be interesting is when you have self parking, tyres aren't always the same size or have circumference despite the tyre side plate saying it's xxx/cc r .
In answer to the question about speed rating on the same axle, answer is yes provided its greater than the minimum the manufacturer has stated.
F1 used different compounds but they were whole sets. There are other things at play on a race circuit which can change a tyres behaviour.
