Replacement 4 iron or hybrid?

I managed to wrap my 4 iron round a tree at weekend, snapping it in two - think the club went further than the ball!

My original reaction was to try and replace it like for like but after drawing a blank on eBay I had the thought that I might go for a 22 deg hybrid instead.

As a complete beginner I don't know the pros and cons - any thoughts?

Do you still have both pieces of the 4 iron?
Take it to your pro and he'll put a new shaft in it for you

It is a very good question that only you can answer. How do you get on with your long irons? Have you ever hit a hybrid before? If you do not get on very well with your long irons then you can always go and try a hybrid at a shop with a range somewhere. See how you get on with it, then make your choice wether to do like bob said and get your 4 iron fixed, or just get a hybrid which are normally a bit easier to hit than a long iron.

No I've got the grip end but not the head, I lost it on the way round (the incident happened on the 3rd). I didn't realise it was fixable though so didn't really look out for it!

I'd go for a good quality hybrid as they are much easier to hit. Online golf have the Taylormade Burner on special at £69.99 which is well worth a look.

Its all depending on how you would hit a hybrid vs. a 4 iron.

I am a huge fan of hybrids due to their versatility as they can be used off the tee, work well out of the rough and around the greens they can be handy too.

Personally I would go with a hybrid, much more versatile not only from the tee but from the rough aswell

Cheers for the feedback guys, to be fair I hit my 4 iron reasonably well, just think I might be in for a reasonably long wait for a matching club to come up on eBay!

Luckily I've still got my old one (only got this set second hand just after Christmas!) so can use that while I'm waiting to replace it.

I have a Taylormade 19 deg hybrid that I hit well but not as consistently as the iron but was thinking 22 deg hybrid might be easier to hit.

Think I'll just keep an eye out for both options and snap up a bargain if one comes along. Or more likely just get sick of waiting in a couple of weeks and splash out!

What was the original make and model? As a beginner a hybrid isn't a bad idea anyway and maybe as you progress you'd want to think about upgrading the irons anyway so the 4 iron can come then. There is nothing wrong with having both the iron and the hybrid and swapping them depending on conditions and where you are playing

It was a TM R7 draw iron, the most annoying thing is that I only got them a couple of weeks ago to replace the set I got to start with to make sure I was going to stick with it. So was hoping to stick with these for a while yet!

Sounds like the hybrid might be a decent investment anyway though and still only got 12 clubs so plenty of room in the bag to replace the iron as well at some point in future.

Think that sounds like a plan......

Go out and find the head, get it reshafted, and you are back in business. Can't be that hard to find, it won't be far away.

best idea, i can normally tell how my game is going to go by warming up with a 4iron on the range.

good 4 irons - im going to strike the ball well and putt like a jelly fish
bad 4 irons, - my irons from 4-6 are going to be poor so its going to need good chipping
