The clowns who predicted SPL Armageddon. Rangers supplemented the SPL and clubs would not survive without the wonderful Glasgow Rangers. I believe the headlines even went as far as saying that five clubs (St Mirren, Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Inverness & Dundee United) would be dead in a month!


Read it and weep Regan, read it and weep Doncaster, read it and weep SFA, read it and weep Rangers and your fans!


Average attendances from the SPL clubs in comparison to last season, key factors to remember are Hearts, Dundee and Ross Co still have derby matches to play and Kilmarnock, Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen and Dundee still have Celtic to play at home.


Ross County + 70%
Dundee + 28%
Dundee United + 22%
Aberdeen + 12 %
Inverness + 10%
Hibs + 7%
St Johnstone + 4%
St Mirren + 2%
Motherwell - 3%
Kilmarnock - 7%
Hearts - 10%
Celtic - 10%


Only real surprise to me is that Kilmarnock fans have once again let their team down.

I also note that the SPL is a lot more competitive this year. A glance at this seasons SPL table shows a gap of only 6 points between the top and the team in eighth place. Last season at this stage the gap was a staggering 24 points. Does Scottish football really need Rangers??????


I think the positives far outweigh the negatives and thankfully we have another 2 years at least without Rangers in the SPL.
 
Well said Crawford I was going to post something like this on the Rangers thread but notice that it has been closed down.

There were some staggering comments when the New Rangers went into Div3, not just from Rangers fans but from many south of the border.
For sport to be successful it needs to be competitive, something that the EPL are finding out with the Big 3 now well in front of the rest.
And....before the wearie willies say it is a poor Celtic side, lets just say Barca.
 
Interesting .. very interesting also that Celtic support is down , maybe they are spending dosh on CL games rather than SPL games tho...
Question tho & a genuine one not stirring, does the fact the league is closer mean the poorer teams have gotten better , or the league in general is /has gotten poorer ???

Hibs were struggling last season , think they are second now .. di they buy big/well in the close season ? i know pat fenlon & wish him well but is he that good of a manager ?

Which is why most football fans will agree that the Championship is the most exciting league in England. The ludicrous amount of money now washing around in the Premier league is not filtering down and is just being hoovered up by the same 4/5 big clubs, further distorting the premier league. Eventually the bubble will burst, or a breakaway European league will form. The sooner the better for me.

Our crowds are down for 2 reasons,we have no Huns to play and many have cherry picked CL games instead of league games,especially the huge support from your side of the sea Bill.

The other thing that has changed is that a only 1 Glasgow team will be streets ahead of the rest come May instead of the usual 2.Once we are knocked out of Europe we will win the league by at least 15 points.

Last night I watched the Bundisliga show on ITV4....now that is a great league! Great crowds,good football and at a cost that is superb,superb value.I am seriously thinking of taking a boys trip over to Frankfurt,Berlin or somewhere to take in a game and a few German ales as it is supposed to be a great experience.

I think the resurection of Hibs and Aberdeen has helped the league a lot.
As a Hearts fan I think our fans chanting 'One Pat Fenlon' at last seasons cup final will come back and haunt us.
 
Hibs aren't that great and I expect them to fall at some point this season a run of bad games in a league as tight as this changes the picture completely. My teams been pretty poor this season but if we won on Saturday we would have went top. Shame the players never turned up against the Well.

As for the Mutants glad to see them gone, hope they never return.

Alex McLeish has seemingly ruled himself out of the running to make a return as manager of Scotland.
McLeish was in charge of the Tartan Army for a successful ten-month period in 2007 but he left to take charge of Birmingham City.
He is currently out of work since leaving Aston Villa

in the summer but, despite admitting he is ready to return to management, he says that he is still looking to remain a club boss.
"I left the national team to take up club football. I felt I was missing the day-to-day stuff and I think I am still of that mind," he told TalkSport.
"I wouldn't like to be unfair to Scotland fans in terms of coming back to the job and being a hypocrite.


"I really enjoyed working at national team level and players were full of enthusiasm and confidence and we had some great performances and results, and that is the bottom line as it intensifies for that one week - the press pile the pressure on as they are in.
"I don't want to come out and say I don't want the Scotland job, I'd never want to say that. But I do feel I've still got some time left in club football and that's what I want to focus on."

Armageddon predicted by Regan was never going to happen after the TV deals were signed as the SPL were only about £5m down on the last deal over a 5 year period. Maybe the SPL and SFA should have got down to work and sorted out the TV deal first before coming out with these silly statements. Despite many RFC supporters wish for the SPL to die , I am not one of them.

It certainly is a promising start to the SPL without RFC but a bit too early to make a full judgement yet.
The figures look good on the surface for some clubs but again it is a bit early to say how crowds are affected just yet. Comparing them to the average crowds for the whole of last season somewhat skews the figures as attendences are usually better at the start of the season before the winter and when teams have nothing to play for later in the season. A comparison against the first few months of last season may be more accurate, but again possibly not depending on when each club played the old firm. Also it should be noted that all clubs have not yet charged the same prices for matches against Dundee than they did for Rangers, so maybe a matchday revenue comparison would be better

Loooking at each club in turn (ignoring Ross County and Dundee as they were not in SPL last season)

Dundee Utd:- The club that had the least to loose (possibly more to gain!!) with Rangers out of the SPL as with Dundee as the replacement they were going to sell it out. Against RFC their own fans did not really turn up, but they will go to a Dundee Derby. DUFC did not charge the standard “old firm” price for a ticket for the Dundee Derby, but I reckon they would still be up and happier with Dundee in SPL

Inverness:- Much the same as DUFC as they now have a derby game against Ross County


Aberdeen: Good increase in numbers. Aberdeen had a free season ticket for kids scheme and it appears to be working. It might not bring them much extra revenue now but hopefully a new generation of supporters for the future.

Hibs :- Finally getting a decent side on the park and many stay away fans are returning.

St Johnstone: Have strong dislike for Dundee which could be help increase crowds. Will be interesting to see mach day revenue rather than crowd numbers.

St Mirren: Loyal (small) fan base but again will be interesting to see mach day revenue rather than crowd numbers.

Motherwell. Had pretty decent crowds last couple of years, may be down as team not as consistent as last year.

Kilmarnock :- Always had a large visiting RFC support and will suffer without it. Also may be suffering as a result of abstaining in RFC SPL vote

Hearts: Their scheme of buying discount tickets before match day appears not to be working and the casual supporter is staying away. In deep trouble.

Celtic:- Loss in crowds could be worrying but it may be as suggested CL tickets are being chosen over SPL games. By being in CL profit is guaranteed.



Its laughable that the league is more competitive without RFC. It has been a boring two horse race for years and if you remove one horse how can it be more competitive? Celtic have changed half a team before and after each CL match which has led to inconsistent results. Previously before/after CL games they have played almost a full team. Why the change now? In the previous 2 horse races each game was a must win, I fully believe Celtic don’t see it that way now and can easily afford to drop quite a few SPL points. I agree with Dodger that once they are out of Europe they will win league by 15-20 points. For the SPL to remain competitive Celtic need to stay in Europe for a while into next year. The most likely way for this to happen is via the Europa Cup.

It should be noted that in 2009-2010 everybody was talking about a more competitive SPL at xmas when 6 points covered the first four sides. Kevin Thomson was roundly laughed at when he said the old firm will finish 20 points ahead by the end of the season. The league finished as below

Rangers 86 pts
Celtic 81 pts
Dundee Utd 63 pts
Hibs 54 pts

Not only Killie fans, but away support refusing to go to Killie on the back of their blatant support of Rangers and their coach being a complete knob.I've followed Hibs down to Killie twice each year for ages, I'll not be back and neither will the 20-odd guys I go to games with.Shame, their pies are only bettered by Dunfie's flaky steak bridies.

Fenlon has done a decent job.He's still adjusting to a 'bigger' league, and he makes mistakes, especially with the timing of substitutions, but he's doing a good job.He's made some very good loan signings in Griffiths ( 11 goals this season and much improved-looks like we're sign him on a permanent either in January pre-contract or end of season) Claros ( who was abject last year but a different player this year) and McGivern (NI left back from Man City, he looks a real prospect, no chance we'll keep him)

If you do know Pat and speak to him any time soon, congratulate him on turning round the club in a pretty short time frame.


Watch out for Hearts going kaput soon, something I'd hate...Edinburgh needs two healthy teams.

Looks like sooner than I thought.

Winding up order by HMRC for unpaid VAT/PAYE/NI due to paid on Tuesday, approx £500,000 followed by wages due on Friday, approx £400,000.So £1M by Friday or they're finished.

Only chance they have is if Hearts still own tynie.If Romanov has hived it away from the club, he'll burn them and punt the land.
