Refereeing decisions

Spot on Imurg. And how often does a manager make a comment like "well we've had so many go against us this year" or "I didn't see it" when something monstrous goes for them for once?

True. Listening to 5 live last night in relation to the tackle by the Wigan player. According to the Newcastle manager it was just about an attempted murder. And according to the Wigan manager who did not see it (of course not), he is a lovely lad without a nasty bone in his body. And Martinez is actually one of the better managers. Then on 6-0-6 you have the fans saying much the same thing.

So when you have two such differing interpretations of the same incident depending on which team you support or manage, then what chance have the refs got?

Thanks for your oh so mature insight.

I am sure someone challenged me earlier in the season when I said Newcastle would struggle. In fact I am sure I was told I was a knob then and that I knew nothing and the Toon would be top 8........

You were a knob then and you're still a knob now. Some things never change.

Anyone who thinks it's easy should try it. Althoug

I reffed once for the Sunday league team I managed and played for. And it was pretty horrendous, even at the stupidly low level that we played at with about 4 people watching us. I gave a penalty against the opposing team as their defender literally caught the ball on the penalty spot. And I was called every name under the sun, it was ball to hand etc etc.

Then when I did not give a penalty for our team as my striker had blatantly dived, I was harassed again. By my team. That I managed! So I dread to think what it's like with potentially 90% of the people in the stadium hating your guts, the game going at such a pace, players feigning this and that, some falling over at the slightest touch.

Pardew has said he did not realise how bad the tackle was until he had seen a replay of it... So guessing it would have been the same for Martinez as he was standing a few yards away on the touchline...

Bottom line is that it matters not wether there was any intent [or not] you cannot let such an horrendous tackle go unpunished... Won't be of any help to NUFC... But a warning to the lad and others that you will get dealt with...

I ran the line at a match once and that was bad enough. Seemingly I was making flag signals like a sailor on speed.

Anyone see Leigh Griffiths 'goal' for Hibs last week.
A yard over the line and not given....from the sad Jambo!!

Well Played St Mirren btw.

He's never been the least controversial of chairmen though has he? It's his opinion, but not that of every other Latics fan I've spoken to. It was rash and clumsy, but I don't think it was intentional. He mistimed the challenge. The reaction from certain quarters has been disappointing though. The lads had death threats already and the media are treating him like a criminal. I doubt that the reaction would have been the same if it was a player from one if the BIG clubs.

That was a sore one believe me. I can understand the Ref not giving it but the linesman had a clear view and he chose to
ignore the fact that it was at least a metre over the line. Sometimes you wonder, you really do.

Lot of time for Whelan normally but not sure where he's looking on this one. Without doubt the worst tackle I have seen this season. Not sure it would have mattered what club they were from on this one as it was that bad, lucky the lads leg did not snap in half. It was a rush of blood to the head and it has cost him dearly.

Mr Whelan is rather cannily distracting the current level of attention that Callum is getting from disgruntled fans and media whores. Whether or not it's the worst this season is debatable, but whether it deserves some of the attentions it's getting is not.

I'll state again, in my opinion, it wasn't intentional. It was an accident. A clumsy, rash accident. I doubt that there's a current or past professional who hasn't committed something similar (sometimes by accident, sometimes not). I'm not arguing that he doesn't deserve to be punished (and missing the FA Cup semi final, and possibly the final, is a heavy punishment), but some of the vitriol is disturbing.

Accidents happen, from what I saw at full speed it was a bad first touch by the Newcastle player that made it a 50/50 ball, the Wigan player went for the ball and made contact with the ball and collided with the newcastle player,as I said an accident, the ref said he didn't see it but we had reports on the tv he had said sorry to the Newcastle manager at half time?

The tackle was a bad one, its one of the worst I've seen and he should have been sent off.
The lad hopefully will learn from the rashness of his challenge, but it's not the first time he has done it, he hospitalised a player in a reserve a while back too.
He deserves a ban, 3 games, that's what he would have got had the official made the call during the game, and lets get on with it.
Give him the benefit of the doubt this time , then if it happens again then ban him longer.
What he did in my opinion wasn't right but was heat of the moment in a game. He does not deserve death threats or retribution, maybe a word from his gaffer though.

It was a terrible challenge.....if the boot had been on the other knee they would have been up in arms...though this is not the first time the supposedly squeaky clean youngster has been in the firing line for these type of tackles.....to be fair the toon army deserved a point from what was a scrappy game but that's lower end action! Unfortunately not every game can be an el Classico that some fans have come to expect!
