Is there such a thing as a record book you can buy that allows you to record all your round stats as you go round ?
Or do I just use a blank note book ?

fill in a notebook, preferably after the round so you dont hold everyone up, watch out for over-analysis though, keeping a clear head will help you relax and play better. Analysis is for the practice ground rather than the course. Fairways hit doesn't really matter if there is little rough or green in regulation if you are on the fringe etc.

You can also get software for Mac or PC that will allow you to keep a record of the courses you play, your score and number of putts/Fairway drives/GIRs etc (if you are interested in looking at your game in that much depth).

I have recently invested in a bit of software for my Mac called StatDoctor. It is fairly bolty in look but does offer some handy graphs and whatnot to allow me to figure out where I am going wrong. It hasn't really given me a huge amount of insight as it fairly obvious that I am not driving as far as I should and that I'm taking too many putts, but it does allow me to keep a record of my true "unofficial" handicap and encourage myself that I am making some progress.

I have used Scoresaver since '03 and now use Scoresaver 2 (Website). This lets you record all your stats and practice sessions etc. It also assigns a handicap to each of the "Key Stats", e.g. your handicap might be 15 but you hit fairways like a 20 handicapper and putt like an 18 handicapper. It's really good, you can download it free for a 30 day trial, There's a discount code "GMON76" in this month's Golf Monthly which gives you a fiver off.

If that doesn't appeal, pen and paper is a poor substitute, this is the 21st Century after all. There are also free websites which let you enter and record stats such as GolfScoreTracker. As in other walks of life, you get what you pay for.
