Re-training for a trade

How can the training only take 6 weeks when an apprenticeship takes four years :D :D

No company I ever worked for would employ anybody that had only 6 weeks training.

The IOSH health and safety qualification is the same, it can be done in 6 weeks and those guys are then qualified to run the H&S on construction sites and power plants. It's not as onerous as you think.

Look into it; learning to be an electrician is not that big a deal. Domestic installers don't have to have a lot of training. That sort of course might not get you a job but it will qualify you as a domestic installer and you can work for yourself.

Apprentices are a different deal, they spend the first 2 years sweeping up and making tea. Apprenticeships are for kids trying to get into the workplace.

There is absolutely no way I would let anyone who has only had 6 weeks training onto any of my sites that I ran as an electrician. You are kidding yourself if you think it isn't that hard to learn, and doing a disservice to every apprentice.

Agree completely. I shudder at the antics of some of the supposedly 'time served' sparks I've seen in recent years.

6 weeks... you're having a laugh, it takes longer than that to do your regs course and pass the test.
Unless of course there is a new grading on the go... Unapproved Electrician ;)

You wouldn't know how long they have trained for would you? Do you check a tradesman's training or just note that he's qualified to do the job?

I'm not going to get into silly arguments, that's just the reality out there. If you want to re-train as an electrician it costs a few quid, it takes a few weeks and you can be a domestic installer.

Actually, yes you would. Anybody that came looking for a job on my sites would be asked for a history of work and who they served their apprenticeship with. Hardly a silly argument when I have worked with a few of these "electricians" and nearly been killed by them as they really don't know what they are doing.

And how many people would look that hard at an electrician they had found locally and engaged to put a couple of plug sockets in?

I don't know enough about electrician's qualifications to get into the competency of them so I'm not going to try. You don't have to look hard to find those courses though, our local college offers them.

Note that I'm not saying that this is the right thing to do or that these courses are a good thing, I'm just saying that re-training is very 'do-able' and might not take as long as some people think.
