went to the range to practice sum new swings and girips i was shown in a lesson. About 10mins in a few lads came down and started thrashing balls all over the place, walkin backwards and forwords swapping clubs with eachother. in the end i lost it, clearly they didnt care about anybody else or golf! has anybody else experianced this and did you flip like i did?

I have (At the local range attched to a Pro shop not a course) most evenings you find groups of lads there more for the social get together than to work on their swing.

I didn't flip as it is the norm, but I would expect the staff their to try and control them.

Are you saying they didn't run about trying to hit the 'Happy Gilmore' shot??

I don't mind people running around and making noise as I find it helps me focus. It actually gets me into the zone sometimes.

Where else would you have them go?

I order for someone to take interest in golf, and who doesnt move in the same circles you might, then the only place for them to safely learn the game is on a range.

There are far fewer places for kids or adults to take golf clubs these days, land reclaimed for building, or to make into strictly controlled recreation areas where golf of any kind is forbidden.

In my youth, cracking a few balls on the local football pitches was never a problem, but is today, outlawed, and doing a bit of chipping in the local park will swiftly get you marched off today, where it wouldnt when I was young.

The other problem is with the modern day social influences, where manners, good behavior and care is often lacking, and where making a loud announcement of 'look at me' is the norm, likewise with outrageous bahavior as a means of being noticed.

This is more likely to be unacceptable at a golf club, but if it becomes so at ranges, then where will they go?

I had 3 teenage kids larking about at my local range recently, being loud, and doing the happy gilmore thing. This is the first time it has happened at the range I use, and I figured it didn't matter much if it was a one off.

However, they weren't learning golf, they were just pratting about. If they want to be stupid, go and do it somewhere else, as doing what they were doing will teach them nothing. It is just annoying for every one else.

Yes, a range is a great place to learn some golf, and kids should be encouraged to take up the game, but a bit of decorum, and a bit of structure would be nice.

Eventually one of the pro's came out from the shop to keep an eye on them. They were still being stupid, but there were less balls bouncing about off the walls and roof.

I like to practice with an ipod on, so I don't get disturbed.

It annoys me but hey, it's not just my range.

I pick up my kit and move to another bay.

Once or twice, I stopped and waited for them to blast through their 360 (!) balls in half and hour....not so easy these days as a fag break is illegal...

Ranges and cigarettes eh? Much too enclosed.....NOT!

I am often more disturbed by those in most appropriate golfing attire than I am the non golf range crowd as they have a habbit of talking to each other over the bays about there up coming round or previous rounds that day or talking on there mobile. Which is odd as the range I go to is happy for you to take a beer out as long as you bring the glass back

take a chance, get involved with them.
very often there is one who is taking lessons or has played a bit, the others are there for the fun and can't hit.
show just one of them how to improve their chances of getting a half decent strike and the rest will follow as they won't want to lose.
OK it doesn't always work but you have a much better chance of a quieter time if you get them on side.

Re: rage at the range

I've just got back (well, an hour or so). Nice and quiet, but some geezer turned up and instead of using one of the 27 free bays, he went right next to me.....directly in my line of vision.
I've not seen such a bad swing in ages.....truly horrible.
At first I thought he looked lost and in need of help; he started hitting balls all over the place, then standing still for about 30 seconds after each shot admiring his results.
He stopped for a while, stood behind me and starting making wierd noises....I ignored him and pummelled a few 5 woods off the mat at the 200 flag. He went off in a grump and started hitting balls even worse, and spending even longer watching the pile of poo he's just created with his magic-not swing..... :D

Re: rage at the range

As a side thought. I think a viewing platform at the range would be great.

Grab a decent coffee, hook the laptop up, plug in the video camera and 'live' feed the car crash swings onto the web. Bit of entertainment for the rest of us as well!

Mind you, someone will no doubt be 'beaming' me around the net!!

that sounds dangerous

in theory it does, however there are several nice courses in close proximity to the range I go to in Sheffield so there isn't really a rough crowd out drinking if you get me.

I often see Chris Waddle at the range in fact. Next time I am there I might ask for a photo of him and me with our clubs to use as my profile pic

I have a range literally 5 minutes form my house but its always full of chavs, drunks and general wasters and does nothing to promote a calm environment to practice in. There is another across town (15 minute drive) at Downshire which also attracts a few teenagers as described in other posts there to make as much noise as possible but its marshalled a bit better and so they eventually get asked to quieten down etc.

I actually go to Maidenhead (25 minute drive) which is well out of my way but because it is set on a dual carriageway and tucked inside a sport complex it isn't that accessible and so you only ever get golfers there who want to work on their game. It really is an oasis of calm and you aren't hassled at all and can just get down to business. That said I prefer RA's prectice ground as nothing beats hitting of grass but if I'm too tired to go and pick up the balls afterwards or its been wet etc it is a perfect location to use.

A Forum meet near yours? count me in! I'll have a gallon of special brew.

Dave - it really is chav central in the summer and at weekends. The range is dire too with no real targets apart from some inaccurate distance markers. Balls a re crap and the powertees are often broken. The course (Blue Mountain - part of the Crown group) is ok. Nothing special but decent enough without being overly challenging
