Racist terms for groups of people from certain countries.

And then there's Geordies & Smoggies. Smoggies are well educated, well spoken southern (distant thank goodness) cousins of Geordies.
Don't forget the Mackems and the Monkey Hangers between you and the Geordies

A word isn't racist. It is the manner in which it is said and the meaning behind it that is offensive. It is also a personal thing. One man may have no issues with being called a Jock, Paki, Frenchy etc, where another may be extremely offended (and he has that right).

When George Bush called the Pakistani General, "Paki General" he was in no ways being racist.

When a moron says "look at that dirty Paki" he is being racist (amongst other things).

It really isn't difficult to grasp.

I am and have never been in the army , perhaps this should be reserved as a term of endearment for colleagues.
Only time I have been subjected to this was by p*ss*d lager loudspeaker in Magalluf!
Definitely used by the Scottish Soldiers as a term of endearment to each other, and like your experience and others have said it's more the context than the word.

So the 'n' word is acceptable if I'm being affectionate?
Not having that.

Of course it is.

Ever listen to rap, hip hop etc? The words used all the time, and in films......"my ***" being well used by Sammy Jackson in loadsa films.

Excellent post. Unfortunately it is to some though. As demonstrated in this post.

Still, nice to see the n word mentioned, was wondering when that would come up and surprised it took so long. Am looking forwards to white golfers from the bad lands of a golf club in middle England having suffered a lifetime of oppression and prejudice adding some insightful comments on its use.

What about the gingers? They get the mickey taken out of them regularly but nobody raises an eyebrow at that. It's not my fault my hair is a lovely Strawberry Blonde (well at my age it has now developed enchanting Ash Blonde highlights ;))

Going off topic but quickly back onto it. coach Carter in the film Coach Carter makes a fantastic comment where all his Black players are using the N word. He says that if you think it ok to say the word then White, Hispanic etc etc will feel the same way. If it is not ok for whites and Hispanics etc to say the N word then it so not ok for Blacks to say the N word. IE you cannot have it both ways.
totally agree with the comments re specific words being/not being acceptable. It is the way in which they are said that causes problems.

Paul, I wasn't going to post in this thread as many in here know how strongly I view this but I'll summarise below my thoughts which I know are similar to other Scottish guys on the forum.

Saying or calling Jock to each other yes it's generally endearment or even by people they know yes and I find it fine BUT by strangers and people I've never met I do not like being called Jock, never have even when i was in.

Exactly mate, that's why I asked if your man didn't like being called it by anyone. I know few Scottish lads who feel the same as you.

When I hear someone call a Scottish person "Jock" I don't tend to think it's racist but I do always think they are an ********.

As for the "P" word - I used to use it as an adjective when talking about corner shops until a friend of Pakistani origin told me that he knew I didn't mean any offence but is was an offensive term because it had been so closely associated with racist abuse over the years. That was all I needed to hear - have never used it since and never will again.

By the way, it's perfectly acceptable for groups that have faced abuse to "reclaim" the abusive terms and use them to describe themselves and it is not ok for "outsiders" to do so.
