R9 - Should I ?

I was in the same boat when I bought my driver, I didnt need a new driver but I wanted one, once its in your head then I'm affraid you will make the plunge.

Incidently, if you read my review then you will see that I'm not 100% convinced that I made the right choice. Good luck.

Try one out first before you buy. I'm sure it'll feel as different to your Burner, as the previous R7 Quad did to the previous Burner.

As for the lessons vs Kit argument goes. New kit isn't so much about improving your game as much the feel good factor associated with that new item in the bag. If you've got a good enough bonus to allow shrinking your mortgage & having spare change to treat yourself, then why not. Though I'd personally be more tempted to use any additional monies for a golfing break than a new driver, though wouldn't refuse either if my numbers came in tonight. (fingers well & truly crossed)

Nice one Westy, we all deserve to treat ourselves once & a while in this current climate if we can afford to.

Spend the mone getting fit for the correct driver! If your heart is set on the R9, atleast make sure your get the best shaft available to you through a C/F

I am in a similar position, but with a 909 (and no bonus to spend). I don't need one, but in the back of my head is a little chant going 909 909 909.

I thought I would be tempted to buy one on the cheap while in Florida, but they are more expensive here than at home.

However, I am playing a course again on Monday, and they have a D2 with stiff voodoo in the demo bin. Might have to borrow it, and see how I get on.

I can hear the plastic creaking gently in the wallet.

If you hit your Burner well then why bother? You'll be tinkering with the settings on an R9 for a while and it may even muck up your swing while you find the right setting. I saw a guy using one on the club range earlier this week and he couldn't hit a straight shot.....£350 well spent!
I'd spend some of the money on lessons. Get better, get more consistent, then if you still want one in 6 months they will be cheaper. Win-win.

I told you lot yesterday! He has been on the range for the last few days trying all different drivers as he aint getting on with the Smooth.

He is only contracted to Wilson for 12 clubs so he can use whatever driver he wants.

Have just seen pics of Padraig using the old Titleist 905R with a Grafalloy pro lite shaft in it - wow that's Old Skool!

Sounds like he must be struggling with the big stick if he is experimenting at this stage

Do get fitted & my personal choice would be for the new Titleist 909 range...

Dreams at the moment though... sigh..!

EDIT: Interesting MikeH what you are saying about the 905 & Harrington.

Harrington is known as one of the great tinkerers and he does like stuff just so - I'm guessing he used that driver at some stage a few years back and had a good round with it so is hoping to find a bit of magic

he also has really old style Golf Pride Victory (green paint!) grips on his clubs!

ChrisMc, for some people these multi-changable thingamys work a treat & float plenty of peoples boat. I'm very much a traditionalist. Although, I'm not afraid to tinker from time to time. I tried an R7 Quad & for me it didn't work, so was an expensive mistake.

Especially as at the time I was fitted formine my swing was undergoing changes & my resulting swing improvements meant the fit I'd had days earlier, weeks down the line was totally inapropriate. Though that is a seperate issue.

The R9 does address that issue, but still not convinced, so would still suggest a 'proper'(for want of a better descriptive word) driver.

Chris I was fitted for a Tit D2 and I'm not convinced look at my review thread mate.

I play off of 4 and to be honest the Tit is not as forgiving as other manufacturers in my opinion.

I have been seduced by the R9 ever since Mike took me into the fabled GM store room and I saw it in all its glory. It sits well, looks tempting to hit despite being only 420cc (or maybe 440) and as a tinkerer the opportunity to play with the set up is a dream come true. I have to say I'm not convinced by the need to have the same technology in the R9 3 wood but I guess TM see a justification for it.

If your bonus is big enough to treat yourself and reduce your mortgage then congratulations in this climate for obviously doing a pretty decent job at work and I think you should at least try it. Why not have a look at the TM website and see where they are having demos and go along and try it there. They'll have a variety of shafts and a launch monitor so its basically a TM only C/F session

Too Late. I couldn't wait.

The GF finished work early so I had time to go to AG tonight.

I think my mind was made up the instant I hit the first ball. Sweet as a nut, right out the center. So were the next 6-7.

I took my Burner with me. Hit 5 with the R9, then with the burner.

No noticable change in distance between the two, but the R9 seemed to be more consistent. Probably due the the shaft being 1 1/2 inches shorter. The R9 was also noticeably heavier then the burner.

And I was really surprised how forgiving it was. I wasn't expecting that. That was the main thing I was worried about vs my burner.

The real thing that made it for me was how easy it was to draw and fade my drives, and without adjusting the weights and shaft.

And it looks absolutely gorgeous in the flesh.

So I am now officially one happy 'Easter' bunny.

Out Friday morning. But I'm going up the range again tomorrow night to hit a few more.

I think I'll leave it as standard to get a feel for 'normal' before I start to make any adjustments.
