In today's rounds I hit a tee shot into the trees, then a provisional up the fairway.

I found my ball in an unplayable position, with no possible place to drop.

I then went back to the tee and played my third shot from there.

Did I break the rules??

You had 4 options.....

1. Play the ball as it lies

2.Drop within 2 club lengths no nearer the hole.

3. Drop the ball as far back as you like keeping the flag and where your ball ended up in a straight line.

4. Play another shot from where you played your last one, (you can tee it up if your last shot was off the tee)

2,3,& 4 incur a 1 shot penalty.

So why couldn't you just play the provisional? Do you have to go back & play again seeing as the ball wasn't lost, just unplayable?

Because he found the original.....so the provisional has no relevance any more.....

Daft but absolutely correct.

It's not daft. Having a provisional down the middle nicely in play or maybe in more trouble can influence what you would do and which choice to take. That wouldn't be fair. Lot more pressure on having made the long walk back than when hitting a provisional ball. The rule is there to save time if the ball is lost, not to give you an extra option when it isn't.
